Commander David Bates, this year’s recipient of the 2008 Spotlight
Award, is personally involved in deployment, integrity and security of
pharmaceutical and biological supplies needed by the National Disaster
Medical System teams. Bates has been deployed during numerous natural
disasters, including Hurricanes Katrina, Wilma and Rita. He is Chief
Pharmacist and Natural Pharmacy Consultant for the Office of Emergency
Preparedness and Response for the U.S. Public Health Services.
As a recipient of two past Alumni Awards by the School of Pharmacy – the
“Matthew W. ‘Bill’ Wilson Alumnus of the Year” Award in 2003 and
Pharmacy Alumni Achievement award in 2004 – Bates received the Spotlight
Award for his exceptional leadership and public service, as well as
