The great French actress Sarah Bernhardt was 70 years old in the first year
of the Great War, yet she found ways to serve the French cause. In a one-act
play titled "L'Etoile dans la nuit," she played the fiancée of a soldier who was
blinded in a gas attack. This was one of the plays in the repertoire of her
ninth and last American tour, 1916-1918.
