New Dean of School of Education: Wanda Blanchett, Ph.D.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Wanda Blanchett, Ph.D., as Dean of UMKC’s School of Education. Dr. Blanchett, who will begin her duties August 10, 2009, will also have the additional title of Ewing Marion Kauffman Endowed Chair in Teacher Education. Currently, she is the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Curriculum and Associate Professor of Urban Special Education for the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) at the University of Colorado [CU] Denver.

Prior to CU Denver, Dr. Blanchett was the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Urban Special Education in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee [UWM]. With more than eight years of academic administrative leadership experience and achievements, Dr. Blanchett has a national reputation in urban education and issues of social justice that will greatly benefit our School of Education and the larger community. Her strong research record has focused on urban teacher preparation, issues of race, class, culture, and gender, overrepresentation of African American students in special education, and issues of sexuality and disability.

Among her notable contributions at both the UWM and UC Denver are helping to increase the focus and commitment to diversity issues, including urban education, depth of community/university partnerships, strategic planning aligned with the school’s mission, and the conceptualization and implementation of unit assessment systems that linked student and program performance to the urban education mission of these schools of education.

Dr. Blanchett possesses the vision and knowledge to lead our School of Education to the next level in UMKC’s mission of building strong collaborations in urban issues and education. Please join me in welcoming her to UMKC. For more information about our new Dean of the School of Education visit

Dr. Blanchett will replace Dr. Linda Edwards, who will retire Sept. 1. Edwards has served as Dean and Ewing Marion Kauffman/Missouri Endowed Chair for Teacher Education since 2003 and has spent 33 years at UMKC.
