Agapito Mendoza Scholarship Breakfast will be held on Friday, March 18

The Scholarship Fund has assisted approximately 49 Latino/Latina students

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Division of Diversity, Access and Equity (DDAE) will hold its third annual Agapito Mendoza Scholarship Breakfast on Friday, March 18 at 7:30 a.m. at the UMKC Pierson Auditorium, 5000 Holmes. Individual seats are $38; tables of eight are $300.

All funds raised from the breakfast will be allocated to the Mendoza Scholarship and will be matched at payout by UMKC. Scholarship recipients can apply the funds toward tuition, housing and books. During the past two years, approximately $30,000 has been raised.

"While assisting Latino/Latina students through awarding of the Mendoza Scholarships, DDAE also is able to help retain the students through their graduation," said Karen Dace, Ph.D., deputy chancellor of Division of Diversity, Access and Equity. "Your support of the breakfast will help us carry on Dr. Mendoza's tradition of support for each and every student in their particular academic dream."

Agapito Mendoza, Ph.D., served as Vice Provost for Affirmative Action from 1986-2002 at UMKC. He died in 2003. He was known for his commitment to all students and for his ability to make each student feel valued.

Also, Mendoza was involved in various committees and organizations in Kansas City, including the Greater Kansas City Committee on Latino Concerns and the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations. He educated others about the Hispanic culture and tradition, including students in his classroom. For additional details, visit the UMKC Diversity Web site.
