Urban Planning + Design students present ideas for north edge of the Country Club Plaza

Kansas City design professionals judge competition April 28

KANSAS CITY, MO. - Third-year Urban Planning + Design students in the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design (AUP+D) will present site plans that reveal a long-term vision for the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo. Kansas City design professionals will judge the UP+D Prize competition, which takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 at AUP+D's Katz Hall, 5005 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, Mo. The presentation is open to the public.

Led by Ted Seligson, FAIA and visiting professor, and Michael Frisch, AICP and associate professor, the Urban Planning + Design Studio II focused on the north edge of the Plaza. What was once a residential neighborhood, supported by neighborhood retail on the Plaza, is transitioning into other uses, such as office space. These other uses generate different patterns of parking and circulation than retail, and neighborhood circulation and land use patterns are facing development pressures. The students' plans will include decisions about the direction of land use change through 2030.

Each year, AUP+D selects jury members to model a professional design jury. This year's jury includes: William L. Bruning, president and chief executive officer of the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care and former chairman of the Landmarks Commission for City of Kansas City, Mo.; Sara Copeland, AICP, city planner for the City of Grandview, Mo. and chapter president of the American Planning Association's Kansas Chapter; Joy Swallow, FAIA, associate professor and department chair of the UMKC Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design; and Richard Wetzel, AIA, partner at Centric Projects.

Inspired by two AUP+D alumni and entrepreneurs, the UP+D Prize competition will award $500 to the student who shows the most promise in his or her final spring semester project.
