School of Computing and Engineering students receive American Concrete Institute scholarships
KANSAS CITY, MO. - Three University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Computing and Engineering students recently received three American Concrete Institute (ACI) Missouri chapter scholarships. Kyle Dunning, Nate Wood and Alex McCaskill, senior Civil Engineering students, each received ACI's Honorary Luke and Billie Snell Undergraduate Scholarship Award. At the national level, Dunning received ACI's Baker Student Fellowship.
Ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, the Undergraduate Scholarship Award honors long-time chapter members Luke Snell and Billie Snell by promoting the development of future engineers, construction managers and architects. The annual award provides financial assistance for undergraduate students with an interest in careers in concrete design, materials or construction.
ACI's Baker Student Fellowship is for undergraduate students with an interest in a career in the construction industry who are entering their junior or senior year and studying in a civil engineering, structural engineering or construction industry management program. Serving an internship before the award period is required. It provides students with a $7,000 educational stipend for tuition, residence, books and materials; paid travel expenses and attendance fees to two ACI conventions; assistance in finding an industry mentor; and assistance in finding a summer internship.
"Having all three undergraduate awards coming to UMKC is truly amazing, and it is clear that these students have made an impression on the Civil and Mechanical Engineering faculty," said UMKC School of Computing and Engineering Dean Kevin Truman. "It is easy to write glowing recommendation letters for students, such Kyle, Nate and Alex."
ACI is a nonprofit technical and educational society organized in 1904 and is one of the world's leading authorities on concrete technology. ACI is a forum for the discussion of all matters related to concrete and the development of solutions to problems. ACI conducts this forum through conventions and meetings; the ACI Structural Journal, the ACI Materials Journal, Concrete International, and technical publications; chapter activities; and technical committee work. As its chartered objective states, its purpose is "to provide a comradeship in finding the best ways to do concrete work of all kinds and in spreading that knowledge."
