UMKC Urban Planning + Design students move forward with their vision for a resilient Joplin, Mo.
Studio presents redevelopment scenarios Nov. 17Kansas City, Mo. Students from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design (AUP+D) and Gunnar Hand, AICP, president of Kansas City, Mo.-based MOCK Studio, LLC, are moving forward with their vision for a resilient Joplin, Mo.
The senior urban planning studio will present "ReBuild Joplin: Planning a Resilient Community" from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Kansas City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) office, 1801 McGee St., Suite 100, Kansas City, Mo. Design professionals and anyone interested in the redevelopment of Joplin after the May 22 F-5 tornado are encouraged to attend and bring a bag lunch. RSVP at http://tinyurl.com/AIA-AUPD.
A discussion of the students' vision will take place after the presentation. Through the discussion, students hope to refine their ideas, designs and presentation skills before their final presentation to the Carl Junction, Mo.-based Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council and the greater Joplin community on Dec. 9 at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Headquarters.
The Citizens Advisory Recovery Team may also present the studio's ideas to the Joplin City Council.
The Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design (AUP+D) offers educational excellence for students who seek a career in the professions of architecture, urban planning and design, historic preservation, landscape architecture and interior architecture/product design. AUP+D seeks to produce planning and design professionals who will bring a fresh approach to the spatial problems of the 21st century. AUP+D builds partnerships with neighborhoods, communities and municipalities in the Kansas City region and beyond to engage in applied research and give students experience in their chosen field of study.
