UMKC Names Gladstone Student as Honor Recipient

Chosen for outstanding academic and service involvement

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Missouri-Kansas City(UMKC) Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management has selected five graduating seniors as Fall 2011 Vice Chancellor Honor Recipients. Among them is Anthony McDaniel of Gladstone, Mo. McDaniel was commended for both scholarship and participation in programs outside the classroom.

While earning a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree in the College of Arts and Sciences, McDaniel devoted his time to the Student Government Association (SGA) and to UMKC's Mock Trial team, becoming a national finalist in 2010-2011. In another Mock Trial competition, the John Marshall Law School Diversity Challenge, McDaniel took second place. As an SGA senator, he also was a tireless spokesperson for student interests in debates about parking, representation and record maintenance.

Assistant dean of students and advisor to SGA, Eric Grospitch praised McDaniel's "ability to take different ideas and perspectives and bring them together coherently. Anthony's charisma and intelligence encourage others to follow him, and he further earns their respect by not shying away from the 'dirty work' that comes with any student organization."

Over the summer of 2010, McDaniel volunteered to teach trial advocacy for the UMKC School of Law's UMKC PLUS, a diversity program for students from universities around the country. His work culminated in the students conducting a Mock Trial for their parents at graduation.

The Vice Chancellor Honors Recipients program was established in 1975 to recognize seniors who excelled in academic achievement, involvement in university programs and service to the campus and surrounding community.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), one of four University of Missouri campuses, is a public university serving more than 15,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UMKC engages with the community and economy based on a four-part mission: life and health sciences; visual and performing arts; urban issues and education; and a vibrant learning and campus life experience.
