Agapito Mendoza Scholarship fund raises more than $40,000 in its three year existence

Fund has assisted more than 100 Latino/Latina students

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Missouri-Kansas City Division of Diversity, Access and Equity Agapito Mendoza Scholarships help attract, support and retain Latino/Latina students. In the last three years, more than $40,000 has been raised to support these efforts.

The division will hold its fourth annual Agapito Mendoza Scholarship Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 22 in the UMKC Student Union Multipurpose Room 401, 5100 Cherry St. Individual seats are $38; tables of eight are $300.

All funds raised from the breakfast will be allocated to the fund and will be matched at payout by UMKC. Scholarship recipients can apply the funds toward tuition, housing and books.

"The success of this breakfast demonstrates to the UMKC community that Latina/Latino students are a growing population with vital and unique experiences that add to the academic and cultural success of the institution," said Karen Dace, Ph.D., deputy chancellor, Division of Diversity, Access and Equity. "The ability to award Agapito Mendoza Scholarships helps us attract more Latino/Latina Students and retain them through graduation."

Agapito Mendoza, Ph.D., served as Vice Provost for Affirmative Action from 1986-2002 at UMKC. He died in 2003. He was known for his commitment to all students and for his ability to make each student feel valued.

Also, Mendoza was involved in various committees and organizations in Kansas City, including the Greater Kansas City Committee on Latino Concerns and the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations. He educated others about the Hispanic culture and tradition, including students in his classroom.
