Atterbury Family gives gift in support of the Campaign for UMKC
Student Success Center named in their honor
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UMKC Foundation, on behalf of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, has received a gift from Mary and Alan Atterbury and the Atterbury Family Foundation for the Campaign for UMKC. In their honor, the university has named its newly renovated student centerpiece building the Atterbury Student Success Center.
"The Atterburys have been active supporters of UMKC and the Kansas City community, and this gift is evidence of that continued support," said UMKC Chancellor Leo E. Morton. "The Student Success Center is the keystone to achieving Goal Number 1 of our Strategic Plan - to place student success at the center - and the Atterburys are a perfect namesake for that building."
The Atterburys are longtime friends of UMKC, having made significant past contributions directly and through the Atterbury Family Foundation in support of the University, including the endowment of scholarships for the UMKC Trustees Scholarship Program and the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.
"Alan Atterbury has been instrumental in establishing and leading the UMKC Foundation," said Murray Blackwelder, president of the foundation. "The Atterburys have been strong supporters of education in our community and their current gift will provide important progress in reaching our campaign goal."
Alan Atterbury currently serves as chairman of the UMKC Foundation and has served as a UMKC Trustee, chairing the board from 2003-2006. He was a supporter and contributor to the in-depth study on higher education in Kansas City that resulted in the "Time to Get It Right" report. One area stressed in the report was the need for a private endowment board to enhance and manage philanthropic investments in UMKC, which resulted in the establishment of the UMKC Foundation.
Mary Atterbury served on the Friends of the Conservatory Board of Directors, Friends of the Conservatory Ovation Committee, Crescendo Planning Committee and, with Alan, served as honorary chair of Crescendo 2007.
The UMKC Foundation recently set a record for annual funds raised on behalf of UMKC - more than $65 million in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The foundation is leading a seven-year, $250 million Campaign for UMKC, and more that $129 million has been raised in three years.
