Poetry event April 7 is a collaboration of UMKC and The Writer's Place in Kansas City

Poets Michael Waters and Michelle Boisseau will present outstanding poetry of our time at the next University of Missouri-Kansas City at The Writer’s Place Reading Series event Friday, April 7, 2006, at 7:30 p.m.

Waters is the author of nine books of poems, most recently Darling Vulgarity (2006) and Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems (2001). A winner of an NEA poetry fellowship, he has read his poems in venues worldwide, from the Folger Library in Washington, D.C., to Bucharest, Athens, Toulouse, Baghdad and, most recently, Malta. Waters also has edited multiple collections, including the seminal anthology Contemporary American Poetry (Houghton Mifflin), now in its 8th edition. A professor of English at Salisbury University in Maryland and at New England College, Waters is the Distinguished Poet-in-Residence at Wichita State University this spring.

Boisseau, professor of English at UMKC, is the author of three collections of poetry, including Trembling Air (2003) and Understory (the 1996 winner of the Morse Prize). She is a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship winner and is the author of Writing Poems, the most widely adopted college text on the craft of poetry writing in the country, now in its 6th edition. She has read her poetry at venues in Boston, Los Angeles, Nashville, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Cleveland and at many other universities, colleges and community centers.

The event is sponsored by The Writer’s Place, the creative writing program at UMKC through the Department of English, New Letters, and New Letters on the Air.
