Shafer continues Conservatory of Music centennial celebration with Signature Series DebutUniversity of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music alumna and former Lyric Opera apprentice Celena Shafer, recognized as one of the premier artists of her generation, returns to Kansas City next month for her Signature Series debut.
Shafer will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at White Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center.
Since her break-out performance in Mozart’s “Mitridate” at the Santa Fe Opera, Shafer has performed world-wide, including stops in Tokyo, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and the Netherlands. The soprano played Gilda in “Rigoletto” with the Welsh National Opera and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra. This season Shafer has several engagements all over the country, including performances with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and her Carnegie Hall debut in Mozart’s “Requiem.”
Shafer will perform a set of five songs by Alessandro Scarlatti along with Schoenberg's Vier Lieder, Debussy's “Ariettes oubliées,” Roger Quilter's “Four Child Songs” and music by Gershwin. There will be a free pre-concert lecture with UMKC faculty members Rebecca Sherburn and Raymond Feener beginning at 6:30 p.m.
