UMKC names John Amato as Vice Chancellor, University Advancement

The University of Missouri-Kansas City today announced that John Amato has been named the next Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. He will oversee the University’s fundraising, alumni and constituent relations programs. Amato begins his official duties at UMKC on July 1.

Amato comes to UMKC with a distinguished 22-year career in university advancement. He is currently the president of the Iowa College Foundation, responsible for all operations of the Board of Governors. ICF is a non-profit consortium of 24-member private colleges and universities, structured to provide students the opportunity for a high-quality education by securing financial resources.

Prior to IFC, Amato was Executive Director of Development for Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, where he managed successful general capital campaigns and project-specific campaigns. He also is an active member in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), where he worked with other members to set ethical standards and determined fiscal guidelines for fundraising accounting; emphasized the need for universities to better inform their local and federal legislative bodies; and endorsed just practices for online donor solicitation.

“John brings extensive knowledge and broad experience to UMKC, from alumni and constituent relations to strategic development programs,” said Dr. Guy Bailey, UMKC chancellor. “John’s success at Drake University and with the Iowa College Foundation indicates his abilities will help UMKC meets its strategic objectives.”

Amato joins the University in its final stages of a $200 million capital campaign. Your UMKC: The Campaign for Kansas City’s University has raised more than $162 million to date to support scholarships, faculty, facilities and overall excellence. Last year, UMKC set a fundraising record securing $29.5 million in actual gifts in one year, the largest amount in the institution’s history.

Amato and his wife, Betsy, have four children.
