UMKC names Bruce Bubacz as Provost

The University of Missouri-Kansas City today announced that Bruce Bubacz, Ph.D., has been named Provost. He will serve as the Chief Academic Officer and senior member of the Chancellor's leadership team responsible for implementing the University's vision while ensuring academic excellence, maintaining growth in external funding for research and outreach, and supporting synergy among schools, academic departments, centers, institutes, and professional programs. Bubacz begins his official duties on April 15.

Bubacz has served as Interim Provost since August 1, 2005. During that time, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Provost’s Three Commissions, each concerning fundamental missions of our university: Life and Health Sciences Commission; Urban Mission Commission; and Visual and Performing Arts Commission. Each commission is charged with making recommendations that reflect the reality of UMKC’s resource base and that offer practical approaches for administering those resources and personnel toward the implementation of our missions.

“Bruce has done a wonderful job sustaining our institution during difficult times,” said Dr. Guy Bailey, UMKC chancellor. “This demonstrates high leadership qualities and reflects an enduring commitment to UMKC.”

Bubacz is a Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy and Law. During his 33 years at UMKC, he has served the university as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; helped design Ethics in Management courses for students at the Bloch School; taught seminars for the UMKC Law School and held the position of Interim Chair in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. For 13 years, Bubacz was Chair of the Philosophy Department. He also was founding Director of the Honor’s Program.

Bubacz is a frequent speaker for business, government and professional organizations. Since 1992, he has presented the Ethics Block for the U.S. Army’s Personnel Management for Executives Program at Fort Belvoir’s Army Management Staff College. Bubacz also presents the Ethics Block for the National Weather Services Executive Leadership Seminar.
