Mel Tyler, Higher Education Veteran, Named Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) announced that Melvin Tyler has been named Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
“The experience Mel brings to his new appointment will help focus UMKC’s efforts on assisting students in the Greater Kansas City area and around the region to enroll in college, achieve success while here, and ultimately graduate to professions that will benefit the area and state,” Chancellor Guy Bailey said.
Before coming to UMKC in 1993, Tyler served as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Admissions at Missouri Western State University. While there, Tyler created a model for increasing students’ ownership of the residence halls while developing leadership and other skills.
Tyler has been responsible for achieving and evaluating UMKC’s strategic enrollment management plan, which has received national acclaim. He also has made strategic decisions which helped raise the academic profile of incoming students and open the K-16 pipeline to UMKC. He is a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, has written a chapter for Essentials of Enrollment Management: Cases From the Field (2004), has penned several articles for Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Monthly, and is nationally recognized in his field as a strategic planner and as an enrollment management consultant.
UMKC, one of four University of Missouri campuses, is a public university serving more than 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UMKC engages with the community and economy based on a three-part mission: visual and performing arts, health sciences, and urban affairs. # # #
