UMKC names Gail Hackett as Provost

The University of Missouri-Kansas City today announced that Gail Hackett, Ph.D., has been named Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She will serve as the Chief Academic Officer and senior member of the Chancellor's leadership team responsible for implementing the University's vision while ensuring academic excellence; maintaining growth in external funding for research and outreach; and supporting synergy among schools, academic departments, centers, institutes, and professional programs. Hackett begins her official duties on Feb. 15, 2008.

Hackett is currently the University Vice Provost and Dean of University College, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University, Arizona State University. While at ASU, she has served as Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, Associate Dean of the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, and Director of the Division of Psychology in Education.

As part of her leadership in the College, Hackett oversaw units located on all four ASU campuses with responsibilities for 5,000 undergraduate exploratory students and 2,300 bachelor of interdisciplinary studies majors. Under her direction, University College played a significant academic role in the 2006 opening of the Downtown Phoenix campus through its School of Letters and Sciences, and the college has been the primary liaison to Arizona community colleges for partnerships leading to baccalaureate degrees.

Hackett’s research and teaching focus on social cognitive career theory, academic achievement and vocational development, and gender and ethnicity in counseling. She is co-author of “Counseling Diverse Populations” and has published widely in academic journals, including “Journal of Counseling Psychology”; “Journal of Career Assessment”; and “Journal of Counseling and Development.”

Hackett has served in a variety of positions, including professor, counseling psychology program at Arizona State University; program leader and director of training, counseling psychology program, Graduate School of Education, University of California, Santa Barbara; and assistant professor of counselor education, Academic Faculty of Special Services, College of Education, The Ohio State University.
