UMKC celebrates V-Day’s 10-Year Anniversary

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Women’s Center, in collaboration with the 2008 V-Day campaign, will bring “The Vagina Monologues” and “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer” to the campus this month.

Benefit performances of “The Vagina Monologues” will take place Thursday, Feb. 14, and Friday, Feb. 15, with a sign language interpretation provided on the second night, while a benefit performance of “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer” will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16. Doors for each performance open at 7 p.m. at the University Center, Pierson Auditorium, 5000 Holmes Road. Proceeds will benefit the Rose Brooks Center, the UMKC Violence Prevention and Response Project and the national V-Day’s spotlight campaign, “Women of New Orleans and the Gulf South.”

This year is the 10th anniversary of V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls. In 2007, over 1,150 communities hosted V-Day benefits around the world to raise funds and awareness toward ending violence against women. These events raised over $6 million through performances of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues.”

The V-Day movement is growing rapidly throughout the world, in 119 countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean and all of North America.

V-Day, a nonprofit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. In 2001, V-Day was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities" and in 2006 one of Marie Claire Magazine’s Top 10 Charities. In nine years, the V-Day movement has raised over $50 million.

Tickets for individual UMKC shows are $7 for students and $12 for non-students in advance or $10 for students and $15 for non-students at the door. Packages to attend a “The Vagina Monologues” and “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer” performance are available for $12 for students and $20 for non-students. Packages are available for advance purchase only. Tickets can be purchased through the Central Ticket Office at 816-235-6222.

In line with the V-Day campaign and fundraising efforts, the Women’s Center is also selling books, V-Day buttons, T-shirts and chocolates in its office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, as well as at the performances.
