The James C. Olson Performing Arts Center new name for UMKC’s PAC Memory of former UM System President and UMKC Chancellor honored for dedication to the ArtsThe University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) will rename its Performing Arts Center in memory of Dr. James C. Olson on Thursday, June 12, 2008, 5:30–7 p.m. at the PAC. The private event includes a reception, which begins at 5:30 p.m., and the program starting at 6:15 p.m.
Olson was the UMKC Chancellor from 1968-1976 and President of the University of Missouri from 1977-1984.
According to a statement by Vera Olson, his wife, Olson believed the arts were a bridge to humanity, culture and understanding. At the time of his retirement from the UM System, the James and Vera Olson Fund for the Arts was established by the Curators at the suggestion of Mel George, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the time. The fund provides performances on the four UM campuses.
Olson was an accomplished historian and author of several books on the American West and Native American history. He co-authored four books with Vera Olson, including “The University of Missouri: an Illustrated History.” Olson died in August 2005.
