OUTSTANDING STUDENTS: University of Missouri-Kansas City Seniors Tara Kloeppel and Sergio Rojas Will Intern for Missouri Congressional DelegationTara Kloeppel and Sergio Rojas, UMKC seniors, have been selected by the University to serve as interns in the Washington, DC offices of Sen. Claire McCaskill and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver during the month of June, 2008. Because of their interest in government service, Kloeppel and Rojas were chosen by the Harry S Truman Center for Governmental Affairs – a division of the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences Political Science Department – and the Office of Student Affairs.
Kloeppel, a UMKC Trustees Scholar, is Executive Vice President of the Student Government Association and is active with the Women’s Center and the Diversity Advocacy Committee. In her application for the position, she wrote, “I want to be a catalyst to improve my surroundings. By attending the Legislative Internship program, I will meet people who will offer new ideas and a fresh outlook to current issues.”
Rojas is majoring in Criminal Justice but intends to study and practice immigration law. After coming to the United States 17 years ago, Rojas knows some of the obstacles and wants to offer a helping hand to people like him and his family. He is a member of the UMKC Association of Latin American Students. Dr. Theresa Torres, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Religious Studies, admires Rojas for his honesty and openness when issues of race and class arise.
A Bootstrap Scholarship from the Truman Center will provide each student with $2,700 for transportation, room and board, and tuition for a political science course they must take as a condition of their internship.
The Harry S Truman Center for Governmental Affairs is a nonpartisan organization supporting research, public programming and civic education, examining public policy from Truman’s presidency that is still meaningful today.
