UMKC Selects The Weitz Company/DLR Group to Design and Build Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational FieldThe University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is one step closer to a new soccer stadium and recreational field. On Oct. 24, the Board of Curators gave the nod to The Weitz Company and DLR Group to design and build a $9 million NCAA Division I regulation soccer field, stadium and team support facility.
The complex will be located at the heart of the Kansas City campus, east of Cherry Street and along East 51st Street in Kansas City, Mo. Construction will begin this fall with completion of the soccer field set for August 14, 2009 in time for the start of the men’s and women’s 2009 soccer season.
“We are very pleased to be part of such a strong design-build team. Our combined experience on similar projects will greatly benefit the University of Missouri-Kansas City,” said Radd C. Way, President of Weitz-Kansas City. “The new soccer and recreational complex will help strengthen the link between UMKC campus activities and the greater Kansas City community. The Weitz Company is very excited about its involvement with that effort through this project.”
“The design team is committed to delivering an attractive, versatile and functional facility for UMKC and its surrounding community. Our design enhances the experience for both students and fans who participate in recreation, intramural or intercollegiate sporting events at the new stadium,” said Bob Carlson, Principal with DLR Group.
The soccer and recreational field and stadium will be fully-lit with an artificial turf surface surrounded by a four-lane, non-competitive training and recreation track. The stadium will hold a minimum of 850 spectators. The field will support enhanced campus life through increased opportunities for student recreation and intramural use. A support building will house locker rooms, coaching offices, and concessions. The project is being funded through a $5 million gift from the Stanley H. Durwood Foundation and existing student fees.
