Michael Artman appointed to joint positions at UMKC School of Medicine and Children's Mercy Hospital

Accomplished clinician, educator and researcher will lead UMKC department of pediatrics and serve as CMH Pediatrician-in Chief

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine and Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics have announced the appointment of Michael Artman, M.D., as Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics at UMKC and Pediatrician-in-Chief at Children's Mercy. Artman will also hold the Joyce C. Hall Endowed Chair in Pediatrics at Children's Mercy. Artman assumes his duties on October 18, 2010.

"Dr. Artman brings with him vast experience and a strong reputation as both a clinician and an educator," said Betty M. Drees, M.D., Dean of the UMKC School of Medicine. "We look forward to his leadership in filling this important position."

Dr. Artman, a pediatric cardiologist who received his pediatric and subspecialty training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been Professor of Pediatrics, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics and Head, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine from 2005 to present.

"We are pleased to welcome a leader of Dr. Artman's caliber to Children's Mercy, and look forward to his contributions and support for the continued excellence and growth of our Department of Pediatrics," says Randall L. O'Donnell, PhD, President and CEO of Children's Mercy.

A prolific author, Dr. Artman has been the recipient of research grants from a variety of sources, including the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. He has also served as a member of numerous committees for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Artman will replace Bradley A. Warady, M.D., who has been Interim Chairman, Department of Pediatrics since September 2009.
