"Cafe Society Day" at the World's Fair.
The World's Fair designated Thursday, August 15, as "Cafe Society Day" in honor of New York's mecca of boogie-woogie and swing which proprietor Barney Josephson opened less than two years ago as a satire on "cafe society." At the end of September, Josephson will open a Park Avenue Branch--CAFE SOCIETY (uptown).
Held in the City Plaza Band shell at the World's Fair, Cafe Society's "From Spirituals to Swing" show played to an auduence of several thousands and had most of the World's Fair jumping that night.
Joe Turner, Kansas blues shouter, showing his tonsils as he "spreads the blues" all over Flushing Meadows. Pete Johnson, one of the famed Boogie-Woogie Boys, at the piano. (8/20/40)
