IBC Responsibilities
UMKC's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is responsible to regulate the safe acquisition, use and disposal of all biological hazards at the university, including recombinant DNA, infectious agents and toxins.
UMKC's IBC is the IBC-of-record for research at affiliated Kansas City institutions (Children's Mercy Hospital, Saint Luke's Hospital and Truman Medical Center).
The IBC and its Biosafety Officers (BSOs) are responsible to evaluate and monitor research and teaching at UMKC and the affiliated institutions for biological safety considerations.

(see NIH Guidelines) (Updated version, approved 08/18/2009)
- A-2 Form in case of research or teaching involving Biosafety Level 2 (BLS-2) or 3 (BSL-3) Infectious Agents, Select Agents, and Biological Toxins (see CDC BMBL-5)
- A-3 Form in case of research requiring Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Containment Measures
- A-4 Form in case of research or teaching that may lead to exposure of human Bloodborne Pathogens and Other Potentially Infectious Material (OPIM)
- Approved Protocols provide authorization for three years, with the requirement for annual continuation and for interim amendments in case of changes in research or personnel.
- Depending on the type of research, approvals by other UMKC compliance committees such as IACUC, IRB or RSC may be required before research can be initiated.
