
Dr. James Snell, Assistant Professor of Percussion, heads the Percussion Studio at the UMKC Conservatory of Music. The studio provides undergraduate and graduate students with a challenging and rigorous course of study covering all areas of percussion endeavor. In addition to systematic study of the core percussion instruments, guest artist residencies provide instruction in the ever-growing areas of symphonic, chamber, and ethnic percussion. Past guest artists include NEXUS, Kalani, Linda Maxey, Michael Spiro, Louis Bellson, Danny Gottlieb, Frank Epstein, Tom Stubbs, John Bergamo, Earl Yowell, Jim Atwood, Rebecca Kite, Sandip Burman, Doug Howard, Steve Houghton, John Riley, Bill Cahn and others.
Recent graduates of the percussion studio have been accepted in some of the nation’s major graduate schools such as The Manhattan School of Music, University of Texas and California School of the Arts. Graduate students at the UMKC Conservatory of Music who have decided to continue their education with us have come from other esteemed programs such as the University of North Texas, University of Illinois, Southern Methodist University, University of Wisconsin, University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the University of Kentucky, to name just a few.
The UMKC Conservatory is also the new home of the Duff School Masterclass. Since its inception in 1982, the Cloyd Duff Masterclass has been training timpanists in the performance tradition of Cloyd Duff, Timpanist with the Cleveland Orchestra for over thirty years. The class meets for one week in June and attracts students of all levels literally from around the world. Click the link for more details.
