The eighth MERLOT International Conference (MIC08) held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is devoted to faculty development in the design, creation, utilization and evaluation of online teaching and learning materials.
The MIC08 conference theme, MERLOT: Still Blazing the Trail and Meeting New Challenges in the Digital Age, recognizes the collaborative efforts within disciplines and the education community around the World to enhance teaching and learning through the use of academic technology.
Conference attendees span all disciplines and are on the continuum from novice to expert in the development and use of online resources. This year the Community of Practice is Education, which included Teacher Education, Library and Information Services, and Faculty Development.
The MERLOT International Conference is designed to foster learning, innovation and practice in the use of information, instruction, and communications technologies in higher education. It is the venue for educators, administrators, and technologists who have interests and expertise in technology-enabled teaching and learning and who recognize the need to remain current in this rapidly advancing field of educational practice and theory.
The Conference offers many opportunities for attendees to gain practical skills in the use of educational technologies through numerous interactive hands-on workshops led by peers and through industry-sponsored technology showcases. It is frequently in these practical workshops and demonstrations that refreshing new insights into applications of these technologies to higher education are gained.

Friday, July 4, 2008 - Independence Day Holiday

Thursday, June 26, 2008 - 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (3 sessions:  June 12th, 19th, & 26th)
Webcast:  Diversity among Learners: Using Technology to Uncover it, Cope with It, and Take Advantage of It
Naomi Story, Mesa Community College, Steve Gilbert, TLT Group, Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group with special guests
Location:  Library Instruction Lab (LIL), Miller Nichols Library, Room 121
Diversity among Learners: Using Technology to Uncover It, Cope with It, and Take Advantage of it
Also see sessions Two and Three on Thursday, June 12 and 19
Leaders/Presenters: Naomi Story, Mesa Community College, Steve Gilbert, TLT Group, Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group with special guests
Session Three: Taking advantage of Diversity:
How can we use technology to take advantage of student diversity - or even extend that diversity? What are some instructional possibilities - among students taking the same course or perhaps students in different courses in different countries?

Students can differ in many ways that matter in a course. How can faculty make use of technology to discover some of the more subtle, important differences among students? When the differences have to do with wealth, can technology be used in ways that level the playing field? And when students differ in what they bring to the course (culture, skills, preconceptions, knowledge), can faculty and students use technology in ways that make diversity into an asset for the course?

In each of the three sessions of this course, we will introduce some 'take-away' ideas and tools that faculty can use, easily and inexpensively, in their teaching. And we are looking for participants who will do the same: bring their own experiences and ideas to the workshop, and share them with other participants. We'll have some materials to help you prepare for each session. And we'll be polling participants to see who has relevant ideas and experiences to share in each session.

Acknowledging the Challenge(s) and Complexity of Diversity:
Not the same old diversity discussion - we'll be confronting the paradox:
A) People are tired of conversations about diversity, technology and engagement AND
B) People are reluctant to talk about more complex, difficult, and painful challenges that are becoming more pressing - about the interaction of diversity, engagement, technology - BOTH at the institutional level and the individual course level.

All of the TLT Group’s online offerings include use of “low threshold” tools, examination of controversial issues, options for participants with a range of experience, and suggestions for assessment as you integrate what you’ve learned into your repertoire. Session Two: Reducing the Gap:
How can we identify and deal constructively with the significant gap that exists with respect to the use of technology among diverse groups and individuals. We will focus on realizing more of the potential of COMMONLY AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY for teaching and learning for groups that have access to common tools (e.g., cell phones) but who have not had much opportunity for experiencing the educational uses of these common tools.

Session One: Uncovering Diversity:

Students can differ in many ways that matter in a course. How can faculty make use of technology to discover some of the more subtle, important differences among students? Friday, Feb 15, 2008 - Due date for proposals for MERLOT International Conference (8/7-10/2008)
Call for Proposals for the MERLOT International Conference to be held August 7-10, 2008. The due date for proposals is February 15, 2008. The Call can also be found on our webpage:
http://mic08.merlot.org/proposals/call.html

Experiential Learning at UMKC and its Impact on Student Learning
Philip G. Olson, UMKC Professor of Sociology
Location:  FaCET, MNL 122
It is common at UMKC and most other Universities to focus on academic, classroom learning, labeling "experiential learning" as substandard for college credit. I will discuss the positive and beneficial outcomes this kind of education offers, and present ways it can be accomplished at minimal cost to faculty and students. Defined simply, experiential learning is the process of learning through direct participation in a work location where learning objectives are specified in advance.

WECAN Coalition Public Hearing
Community Christian Church,
4601 Main, Kansas City, MO
ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri joins WECAN, a coalition of partner organizations, to publicly oppose a divisive and deceptive ballot initiative which would eliminate affirmative action in Missouri.
You may have seen these petitions with the title, Missouri Civil Rights Initiative. The petition seeks a November vote to change Missouri's constitution by adding an amendment which would eliminate affirmative action programs in hiring, higher education and public contracting.
Affirmative action benefits many people who continue to face opportunity barriers, including women, Native Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, South Asians, African Americans, Arab Americans, people living in remote areas, and many others.
The WECAN coalition is made up of several local and statewide organizations, including ACLU, YWCA, UMKC, AFL-CIO, MORE2, SEIU, Jobs with Justice, NAACP, area churches and community groups.
Attend the public hearing on February 11.  Learn about the issues. Hear community and civic leaders.
Remember: if you see a petition about civil rights in Missouri, please don't sign it and call 1-877-644-0466 to let the coalition know the locations of petitioners.
For more information, call 816-756-3113, x. 234.
