GRADUATION
gradbar

Graduation takes place three times per year at UMKC, at the end of each Spring, Summer and Fall semester. An application for graduation form is required of all students. The application for graduation form initiates the degree check process. The form is available in the UMKC Records Office and in most advising offices on campus. The form should be completed and submitted at the beginning of the academic year prior to graduation. In order to graduate in any given semester, students must apply prior to the deadline for that semester which is the end of the fourth week of classes in Fall and Spring semesters and at the end of the second week of classes in Summer semesters.

Applications for graduation should be submitted to the UMKC Records Office or to the appropriate advising office on campus. The deadline dates for each semester are published in the UMKC academic calendar and the Registration and Enrollment Guide.

Students are encouraged to check with the Records Office to confirm that they are listed as an applicant for graduation at least three months ahead of their graduation date.

Latin Honors

UMKC awards Latin honors (Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude) to the top undergraduate and first professional students in each graduating class.  Latin Honors criteria for each academic unit (see Faculty Senate policy for details) will be calculated once per year using the official cumulative grade point averages of students who graduated during the preceding six semesters.  Undergraduates who rank in the top five percent, ten percent and twenty percent of graduates in their academic unit, and who do not receive the higher level of honor, are eligible to be awarded their degree with Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude honors, respectively.  Graduates in First Professional degree programs (Dentistry DDS, Medicine MD, Law JD, and Pharmacy Pharm-D) may be awarded degrees with Latin honors as determined by policies established by the academic unit responsible for the degree.  Latin honors will not be awarded to students in graduate (masters and doctorate level) degree programs.  Students whose degrees were awarded prior to June 1, 2004 may not have Latin honors conferred retroactively to their degree.

Diplomas

Diplomas are available so that students may pick them up in person beginning 40 days following the last final exam for the semester.  They are located in the UMKC Records Office at 5115 Oak Street, AC 115 and students must present photo identification to pick up their diploma.  Diplomas not picked up in person will be mailed to students beginning 60 days following the last final exam using the address supplied on the application for graduation form.

For special delivery including overseas delivery, or if someone other than the student is going to pick up the diploma, please contact the Records Office to make arrangements.

The student's last name as it appears on the diploma must correspond with the official name on the academic record at the time of graduation except in the case of replacement diplomas.

Replacement diplomas may be ordered whenever an alumni experiences a lost or destroyed diploma.  Replacement diplomas are provided at $10 each and may take from four to six weeks to process. Current signatures appear on replacement diplomas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City appears even in those cases when the student graduated prior to the change from the University of Kansas City.

A diploma may not be released to any student who is indebted to UMKC until the debt is paid.

Undergraduate and graduate diplomas are 8 1/2 by 11 inches. The diplomas for the professional degrees (Law, Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy) are 14 X 17.

Changes to Anticipated Graduation Date

Students who need to alter their graduation plans need to submit a new application for graduation to the UMKC Records Office or the appropriate school's student services office. The semester and other information listed on the new application for graduation will be used to replace the information previously submitted. All deadlines for the new semester of graduation apply to applicants that are altering their semester of graduation.

Commencement

Two commencement exercises are held each year. Summer and Fall graduates participate in the December commencement and Spring graduates participate in the May commencement.

UMKC hosts a graduation fair several weeks prior to each commencement.  Students may order regalia (cap and gown), announcements, class rings and other related items at the graduation fair. We encourage students to attend the graduation fair to check the accuracy of their academic record with regard to degree name and student name for use on the diploma and transcript. Any student who cannot attend graduation fair may contact the UMKC Bookstore for additional information on commencement materials.

Each school within UMKC is responsible for contacting students and coordinating the time and location of commencement exercises. Students should receive instructions from the school during the first eight weeks of the semester of graduation. For more information, please contact the appropriate school which supervises the student's degree program.
