What do you need to access STAR-UMKC?

  1. Your Student Number
  2. Personal Identification Number (PIN).  Your initial PIN number is your month and date of birth (MMDD).  You will then be asked to assign yourself a four digit PIN.  If you have forgotten or wish to change your PIN, please come to the Registration Office, AC 115, in person with a picture ID. 
  3. You will need to download Host-On-Demand (see below for instructions) via your web browser (e.g. Netscape or Internet Explorer)

    Note: You cannot use a standard TELNET client with STAR-UMKC. The mainframe does not understand the characters telnet sends and telnet doesn't understand those the mainframe returns, TN3270 (Telnet 3270) does.

How can I access STAR-UMKC?

  • From your home computer with the downloaded Host-On-Demand (see below for instructions).
  • From any of the on-campus labs managed by Computing Services (for the location of these labs access the Labs page maintained by the Call Center.)

When can I access STAR-UMKC?

Host-on-Demand Instructions

First-time User Information

Host-on-Demand (HOD) is a downloadable self-installable web client providing 3270-emulator access to the host mainframe - STAR-UMKC.

Note: An alternative to the Host-on-Demand download along with troubleshooting support and tips for both solutions, is available on-line at http://www.umkc.edu/is/support/software/HOD/.

Since HOD is invoked from a clients' Web browser, current versions of Netscape and/or Internet-Explorer (IE) are required.

  • Netscape browser version 4.5 (Win95, 98, NT4, AIX and UNIX)
  • Internet-Explorer version 4 or 5 with SP1 (Win95, 98 NT4 and Sun  Solaris)

Note: UMKC students can obtain a copy of Netscape with the Dial UMKC CD which is available in the student computer labs.

Download Procedures

  1. Initial start-up of HOD presents a screen asking the user to choose either a 24 lines-per-screen or a 32 lines-per-screen configuration.
  2. After making this choice, HOD downloads and self-installs the emulator-applet onto the users' desktop.
  3. During this download the user will be prompted to accept several security certificates.  Users should reply yes to these requests plus check the box indicating it is to remember it has given this authority.
  4. Depending on the processor speed of the users' desktop plus network business, this initial download self-install may take several minutes.
  5. The final step of this initial start-up is to restart the browser, return to this STAR page and connect to STAR-UMKC using the button below.

All future access to HOD simply checks the currency of the users' 3270-applet code and then proceeds to the appropriate screen in the standard path.
