The mission of the Laboratory Animal Center (LAC) is to provide a quality animal care and use program while assuring compliance with federal agencies and private accrediting bodies. Since 1978, the LAC has been fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International.

The LAC serves a support function for all animal care and use activities at the university with oversight and guidance by the UMKC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Animal Users’ Committee and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research.

Additionally, a wide variety of technical services are available to researchers including colony management, tissue collection, injections, and animal identification. Training and guidance is offered to all users to ensure humane and appropriate use of animals for experimental purposes. Training opportunities include general orientation of the facilities, species-specific training, euthanasia techniques, as well as other technical procedures.
