Radiation Safety Committee

The NRC

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has authority over all operations involving byproduct material whether produced in its facilities or not.  The Commission has entered into a working arrangement with the University (represented by the Radiological Safety Officer) under which it has granted a license to possess and handle certain radioactive materials.   A license is subject the recognition by the University and its staff of certain rules and procedures and delegates administrative responsibility to the University for possession, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.

The Commission reserves to itself certain rights to revoke or cancel arrangements, to repossess or recall active materials, to inspect facilities, and to review procedures.  The continued existence and renewal of the license depends on the acceptance and observance of recognized procedures by all members of the staff of this University concerned in any way with the handling of radioactive material.  The purpose of such procedures is to ensure that radioactive materials are handled with the least possible hazard to the individual workers, their associates, the University employees, and the general public.
