Research Protections Program
Radiation Safety Committee
UMKC’s Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is responsible for developing policies related to radiation safety which ensure compliance with the appropriate regulations, including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The RSC is required by the NRC regulations and under conditions of its’ license, to maintain oversight of all the operations involving radioactive material and radiation-producing equipment at UMKC. The RSC advises the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and UMKC’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) on matters relating to radiological safety and compliance with the NRC regulations.

The Committee
The RSC membership must include an authorized user of each type of use permitted by the license, the Radiation Safety Officer, and a representative of management who is neither an authorized user nor the Radiation Safety Officer. The committee may include other members the licensee considers appropriate. Our RSC ensures that adequate mechanisms for oversight are in place to determine that the radiation protection program, including training of staff, is effectively implemented by the appropriate individuals.
RSC Meeting Dates
The RSC meets at least 4 times a year and as necessary- all meetings are mandatory meetings
Annually, the RSC reviews the radiation safety program which includes ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) considerations. This includes the review of the efforts of the RSO, authorized users, and workers, as well of those of management to maintain ALARA.
Handbook of Radiological Operations - This handbook has been developed to ensure the safe and proper use of radioactive materials and to comply with applicable governmental regulations
