Certification Classes

Safety is paramount with SRC operations as well as a majority of everyday situations – and, empowering individuals with knowledge, preparedness, and awareness – are key components to keeping this a top priority. We offer individuals and communities – youth and adults alike – opportunities in Basic Water Rescue and Lifeguard training as well as individual courses in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

All certifications are sponsored by the American Red Cross and taught by faculty and staff members of Swinney Recreation Center.

CPR and AED (Adult and Child)

Course Description

In this classroom-based course, the layperson can learn to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to adult and child victims, use an AED and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over the situation. This course is for anyone who needs to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of everyday settings.

Course Content

  • Identify differences between expressed consent and implied consent
  • Identify methods of reducing risk of disease transmission during care
  • Describe purpose of Good Samaritan laws
  • Explain how to check a conscious person for life-threatening and non-life-threatening conditions
  • Recognize signals of a cardiac emergency
  • Identify links in Cardiac Chain of Survival
  • Demonstrate how to perform CPR and use an AED when necessary
  • Identify precautions to take when using an AED on victim
  • Explain how to activate and work with EMS system

Certification

All CPR/AED certifications are valid for 2 years from the date of course completion.

None

Course Requirements

Payment of the course fee is not a guarantee of certification. To be eligible for course certification you must:

  • Be present for the entire course and participate in all activities
  • Demonstrate proficiency and complete all required skills
  • Pass a multiple choice written exam at the discretion of the instructor

Course Format

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an instructor to successfully complete skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam.

Course Length

Approximately 3 hours

Basic Water Rescue

Course Description

The American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue course provides individuals, such as public safety personnel, parents, daycare workers, teachers, water fitness instructors and other individuals who work around water, with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to many types of aquatic emergencies. This course also prepares individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others.

This is NOT a substitute for a Lifeguarding course. American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is a 26 hour class.

Course Content

  • List water safety guidelines for activities in, on or around water
  • Recognize characteristic behaviors of someone who needs help in the water
  • Define and develop an emergency action plan
  • Describe how to trap air in clothing for buoyancy as a means of self-rescue
  • Explain how to perform an ice self-rescue and help someone who has fallen through ice
  • Demonstrate two methods to perform a reaching assist
  • Describe how to care for someone having a seizure in the water
  • Demonstrate two ways to stabilize a victim's head, neck and back in water

Certification

American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue is valid for 3 years.

Prerequisites

None required; however, it is recommended that participants are comfortable in chest-deep water.

  • Prove proficiency and complete all required skills
  • Pass a multiple choice written exam at the discretion of the instructor

Course Format

In the classroom, students view, discuss and participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an instructor to successfully complete skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam.

Portions of the course may also be conducted in shallow water (no more than chest deep) in the pool.

SCUBA Courses

SCUBA–PADI Open Water Diver Course

SCUBA–PADI Open Water Diver is the most widely recognized and respected scuba diving certification in the world. Within a few classes, you can be enjoying the underwater world! Nothing compares to the weightless exhilaration of breathing underwater. If you have an appetite for excitement and adventure, odds are you can become a scuba diver. This is part one of a two-part course.

The cost for Part I is $225 and includes: Diver Manual, Recreational Dive Planner and Workbook, Adventure Logbook, Student Record Folder, use of videos/DVDs, the use of BCD, tank, regulator, weights, mask, snorkel and fins. You also can get a referral at no additional cost.

The registration deadline is generally one week in advance before each weekend course. Each weekend sessions runs on both Saturday and Sunday.

Discover SCUBA Courses

Discover SCUBA introduces potential divers to the weightless exhilaration of breathing underwater. It's a great way to experience what scuba diving is really like. The scuba instructor will explain the basic principles and give an overview of the scuba gear. Once participants are comfortable, they will learn basic scuba skills before going on a short discovery dive in the pool.

The skills learned during the Discover Scuba Diving experience can help participants who are interested in taking the full PADI Open Water Diver certification.

Most Discover Scuba Diving experiences are scheduled with in a two-hour time block. The fee is $30 per person and includes: use of scuba gear and the pool rental (use of diving boards).

A minimum of 10 participants and/or $300 must be met in order for event to occur. Contact John Aust for scheduling your Discover Scuba Diving experience today.

Lifeguard Training Courses

Course Description

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguards participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. After completion of the course, students will be certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED training.

Course Content

  • Describe characteristics and responsibilities of a professional lifeguard
  • Describe role of lifeguards in ensuring facility safety
  • Identify the behaviors or swimmers, distressed swimmers and an active and passive victim
  • Demonstrate proficiency in a number of safety care protocols and procedures
  • Demonstrate proficiency in CPR, First Aid and AED care

Certification

American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is valid for 2 years. The CPR/AED knowledge and skills are assessed at the professional rescuer level.

Prerequisites

  • Must be fifteen (15) years of age
  • Successfully pass a pre-course screening and testing
  • Must be able to complete a 300-yard continuous swim using proper strokes
  • Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs
  • Swim 20 yards using crawl or breast strokes, surface dive and complete timed 10-lb. brick retrieval at a depth of 7-10 feet

Course Requirements

  • Be present for the entire course and participate in all activities
  • Demonstrate proficiency and complete all required skills and activities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all required final rescue skill scenarios
  • Pass both the Section 1 - CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid, and;
  • Pass the Section 2 - Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80%

Blended Course Format

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an instructor to successfully complete skills practice and skills testing. Students will also learn to be proficient in skills while in an aquatic environment.

Course Length

Approximately 27 hours

(blended learning course format of 19.5 hours in-class and 7.5 hours online)

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Courses

Course Description

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) trains individuals to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses, including Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics. Training includes course planning, organizing, skill development, teaching methods and program development.

Course Content

  • Expand on information from the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) course
  • Identify key elements and strategies for planning and preparing effective and safe swim lessons
  • Identify key class management principles, elements and strategies for planning, preparing and conducting safe swim lessons
  • Describe the importance of effective observation for teaching and how to develop it
  • Observe swimming, headfirst entry and diving skills and accurately classify them and suggest appropriate interventions to improve them
  • Develop the ability to effectively communicate about participant’s progress in swim lessons
  • Modify teaching to meet unexpected challenges including dealing with participants who misbehave
  • Demonstrate the ability to accommodate participants with disabilities and other health conditions

Certification

American Red Cross certificate for Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is valid for 2 calendar years. All authorizations expire on December 31 of each year. Initial authorization may be for less or more time depending on when training is completed

Prerequisites

  • Must be sixteen (16) years of age
  • Successfully pass pre-course sessions, including the six main strokes and treading water
  • Successfully complete the Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) held at beginning of course

Course Requirements

Payment of the course fee is not a guarantee of certification. To be eligible for course certification you must:

  • Complete all reading assignments
  • Be present for the entire course and participate in all activities
  • Successfully complete all practice-teaching assignments
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all required final rescue skill scenarios
  • Pass the final written exam with an acceptable score
  • Demonstrate maturity and responsibility throughout the course

Course Format

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an instructor to successfully complete skills practice and skills testing. Students will also learn to be proficient in skills while in an aquatic environment.
