Before you take advantage of any of the exciting recreational and fitness activities at the Swinney Recreation Center, we strongly urge you to consult your physician regarding your ability and preparedness to participate in the various activities offered. The University assumes that users of the center have verified their health/fitness with their personal physicians and that they assume their own risk in participating.

For more information on specific class offerings, please click on the individual links at the top of the page.

If interested in participating in a class, please sign up early. UMKC students may charge to their student account (not available for online registration).


Stop by the Membership Office between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays to register. Registration deadlines are 5:00p on the Friday of the first week of each session.

Times and fees are subject to change. Class fees are non-refundable.

Connect mind, body and spirit while you tone and shape your body. The focus of our all levels Yoga class is to find balance and promote healing. A toned and well-shaped body is a byproduct of this great class. This class will give the busy yogi everything they need to get in, get mindful and get busy.

Condensing the practice into a powerful one-hour class combines flowing & powerful poses with the alignment you need for a dynamic practice. Work to a soundtrack of mindful breath and contemporary music. Class is open to anyone wishing to go deeper into their practice, build strength, increase concentration or just sweat. All levels are welcome.

Swinney Spin*

Take your cardiovascular workout to a new level with Swinney Spin. Hills, climbs, speed intervals, sprints and jumps will help build endurance, increase the heart rate and gain strength while jamming out to high-energy tunes. Swinney Spin class is designed for all levels of riders.

 

*Swinney Spin classes are limited to 18 participants due to the number of available spin bicycles. Bikes will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kinesis

A workout that focuses on balance, strength and flexibility. You’ll perform a variety of exercises to target total body conditioning. Kinesis movement training works through all of your body’s planes and ranges of motion. This is a great class if you are looking to vary up your workout regimen.

The Kinesis Center is located on the lower level of the Swinney Recreation Center across from the Service Center.

Circuit Training

Circuit Training features stations of cardio and strength training exercises for a total body workout! Circuit training is a program in which you move immediately from an exercise for one muscle group to an exercise for a different muscle group until all major muscle groups have been worked.

The circuit of activities can include free weights, calisthenics exercises, exercise tubing and cardio-respiratory equipment. Moving immediately from one activity to the next allows you to work the cardio-respiratory system as well as the muscular system. Challenge yourself today!

Agility & Strength

Looking to push yourself to the next level? Agility and Strength classes will do just that! Agility and Strength classes work to improve participants’ motor skills and reaction time as well as build strength in all major muscle groups. Certified trainers motivate participants through high intensity cardiovascular exercises and explosive power moves to help participants excel physically.

Classes use a combination of speed drills, agility ladders, plyometrics, and resistance training to improve total body strength, core stability, speed and cardiovascular health. Bring your inner athlete!

HIIT Training

By incorporating intense periods of work with short recovery periods, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) allows you to push yourself to new limits that will have you burning fat long after you've left the gym, The intense circuits in HIIT classes stimulate muscle-building hormones such as growth hormone and ICF-1.

In addition to the hormone response, HIIT training also develops the cardiovascular system. While you push your heart reate during periods of work, you will increase your cardiovascular ability and strengthen your hear. the short rest intervals allow you to increase recovery capabilities resulting in faster recoveries in future workout sessions.

Wednesday HIIT Training classes are in Old Swinney Gymnasium located on the second floor across from the Control Center; Friday HIIT Training classes are held in the Aerobics Room (304).

#swinneyfit Boot Camp

Ready to start your days with an amazing, total body workout? #swinneyfit Boot Camp will have you sweating outdoors on the Recreational Field three mornings per week for three total weeks. Push your body to new cardio and strength limits to unleash your inner athlete!

#swinneyfit Boot Camp is special group fitness class that operates outside of the typical 8-week session. There will be four separate 3-week sessions offered during the summer.
All #swinneyfit Boot Camp participants get a t-shirt on the last day of each session.

Extreme Interval Training
