No Time to Commit? We Still Have Options For You

Swinney Recreation Center offers several free one-time classes and special programming throughout the year. These events are perfect ways for those students, faculty and staff members to engage with us without the long term commitment of a membership or 8-week class session. They are also ways for our current members and active UMKC students to vary up their exercise routine.

We challenge you to take an hour or two from your busy schedule to visit Swinney Recreation Center for these special programs and classes. You just might be surprised to discover just how fun and exciting exercise can be. Fitness Center Equipment Orientations

Never worked out before or simply want to check out the newest fitness equipment? Our fitness center equipment orientations provide that opportunity. This informal (but informative) walk through will help understand what each piece of equipment is designed to do and how to maximize workouts.

Orientations will begin on the hour and take approximately 30 minutes at the Fitness Center entrance.

"POUND is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming. The workout fuses cardio, Pilates, isometric movements, plyometrics and Isometric poses into a 45-minute series. Burn between 400 and 900+ calories per hour, strengthen and sculpt infrequently used muscles, and drum your way to a leaner, slimmer physique – all while rocking out to your favorite music!"

Take a mid-afternoon break and jump into the water. All lap lanes will be removed and the diving boards will be opened for recreational swimming. If swimming isn't your thing, we have the deck available to catch some rays.

Zumba® Under the Stars

Thursday, March 19 (8:00p - 9:00p)

Torch major calories and tone your entire body while dancing and exercising under the stars on the Swinney Recreation Center - Recreational Field. Zumba® routines will combine Latin and international music with rhythmic interval training to create a workout like no other. Enjoy an hour of heart-pumping good time that feels more like a party then an exercise class at this FREE EVENT!

The rain site will be Old Swinney Gym.

Intramurals Sign-Up Party and Disc Golf

Kick off the fall semester by registering your Flag Football team. Teams and individuals are welcome. Stick around for the party and test your skills with Disc Golf targets laid out on the Recreational Field at Swinney Recreation Center.

Start off the new year on the right foot. You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you started. Find out what you're made of with our Bod Pod testing. Available to all UMKC Students with ID on a walk in basis.

For the most accurate readings, participants are strongly encouraged to bring tight fitting clothing (i.e. spandex, lycra, speedo) to change into for test. For best results, participants are also strongly encouraged to fast from all food and liquid 2 hours prior to test.

Calling all ages and abilities of swimming awareness: beginner, intermediate and advanced skills are welcome. Learn the basics, advance your strokes or master new ones at this informal, but informative, 60-minute group lesson. No prior swimming experience needed.

Free to all UMKC Students, Swinney Recreation Center Members. Each student and/or member may bring up to 2 guests each for a special guest rate.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Do you know how to look after your bicycle chain? Fix a flat tire? Tweak your gears? You will get much more mileage out of your bike if you learn how to manage it - plus you will never be caught off guard in an emergency! This class is geared towards beginner cyclists.

Stress Less Fest

Swinney Recreation Center and Roo Wellness want to help manage your stress December 15 through 18 with FREE Interval Trainings and Yoga Relaxation Classes. Leave your stress in the dust at the FREE Interval Training classes on Monday, December 15th and Wednesday, December 17th from 9:00-9:30a. Interval Trainings will be held on the Swinney Recreation Center Indoor Track.

Yoga Relaxation classes will be held on Tuesday, December 16th and Thursday, December 18th from 1:30-2:30p. Yoga classes will be located in the Aerobic Room (304) of Swinney Recreation Center.

First Fridays throughout Spring 2015 Semester (3:00p - 4:00p)

Swim/Stroke Clinics provides instruction to help swimmers from beginner to intermediate improve their swimming skills. It is designed to give participants a positive experience while refining swimming basics. Beneficial to the leisure or recreational swimmer as well as candidates interested in LG or WSI certifications and swim competitions.

Swim/Stroke Clinics are co-sponsored by the UMKC Swim Club and available to UMKC Students & SRC Members for FREE. Non-Members are $15.00 (includes day pass for individuals who are 18 years of age & older). Prerequisites are: minimum age of 18 and participants should be able to swim 25 yards.

Introduction to Tai Chi

Learn the history and teaching mentalities behind Tai Chi and participate in a sample class with University of Missouri System’s Dr. Nina Chen. Tai Chi originated as a self-defense teaching and has evolved into exercise instruction targeted at stress relief, balance, muscular control and healthy breathing. Often called “Meditation in Motion”, Tai Chi promotes holistic wellness through physical movement and mindfulness.
