Swimming and Diving Clinic

This program provides instruction that helps swimmers (ranging from beginner to intermediate) improve their swimming and diving skills. It's designed to give participants a positive experience while refining swimming and diving basics. This program is beneficial to the leisure or recreational swimmer as well as candidates interested in lifeguard or water safety instruction certifications.

Swimming and diving clinics are available for UMKC Students and SRC Members for $10. Non-members' fees are $15 (includes a day pass to SRC for individuals who are 18 years of age and older.

Lifeguard Training Courses

These courses teach lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to work at traditional pools. After completion of the course, students will be certified in lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the professional rescuer and AED training. Prerequisites: Minimum age 15, 300-yard swim and timed 10-lb. brick retrieval at a depth of seven to 10 feet. Lifeguard training course fees are $185 ($160 course fee plus $25 non-refundable skills test administration fee).

Lifeguard Training Challenge

Lifeguard Training Challenge provides individuals the opportunity to prove their competencies in specific knowledge and skills for the Basic Lifeguarding Certification. All responsibility for preparedness rests solely on the participant (may attempt a challenge only one time). Lifeguard training challenge course fees are $70.

Water Safety Instructor Course

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) trains individuals to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses. Training includes course planning, organizing, skill development, teaching methods and program development. Pre-requisites: Must be 16 years old, successfully pass the pre-course session which includes demonstrating the six main strokes and treading water, and completion of the Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT), which will be held at the beginning of the course. Course fees are $200 ($175 course fee plus $25 non-refundable skills test administration fee).

Scuba Courses

Scuba–PADI Open Water Diver Course

Scuba–PADI Open Water Diver is the most widely recognized and respected scuba diving certification in the world. Within a few classes, you can be enjoying the underwater world! Nothing compares to the weightless exhilaration of breathing underwater. If you have an appetite for excitement and adventure, odds are you can become a scuba diver. This is part one of a two-part course. The cost for Part I is $225 and includes: Diver Manual, Recreational Dive Planner and Workbook, Adventure Logbook, Student Record Folder, use of videos/DVDs, the use of BCD, tank, regulator, weights, mask, snorkel and fins. You also can get a referral at no additional cost. For those interested in receiving college credit for taking this class, please email John Aust to find out how. The registration deadline is generally one week in advance before each weekend course. Each weekend sessions runs on both Saturday and Sunday.

Discover Scuba Courses

Discover SCUBA introduces potential divers to the weightless exhilaration of breathing underwater. It's a great way to experience what scuba diving is really like. The scuba instructor will explain the basic principles and give an overview of the scuba gear. Once participants are comfortable, they will learn basic scuba skills before going on a short discovery dive in the pool. The skills learned during the Discover Scuba Diving experience can help participants who are interested in taking the full PADI Open Water Diver certification. Most Discover Scuba Diving experiences are scheduled with in a two-hour time block. The fee is $30 per person and includes: use of scuba gear and the pool rental (use of diving boards). A minimum of 10 participants and/or $300 must be met in order for event to occur. Contact John Aust for scheduling your Discover Scuba Diving experience today.

American Red Cross Courses

General Water Safety Course

This course provides individuals with an awareness of the importance of water safety and general information about being safe in, on or around the water. While you’re there you can find additional information about the aquatic programs offered by SRC. This dry-land event is free for all UMKC students and SRC members but you must RSVP in advance.

CPR for the Pro Rescuer with AED Challenge Course

CPR for the Pro Rescuer with AED Challenge provides individuals the opportunity to prove their competencies in specific knowledge and skills. The challenge is designed for those who are currently certified and just need to renew certification. Uncertified individuals may enroll, but all responsibility for preparedness rests solely on the participant. Course fees are $30.

Swinney Splash

After a busy week studying, come and cool off in the pool where you can join a pick-up game of water basketball or just relax on a noodle. The diving boards will also be open and music will be blasting! While you’re there you can find more information about the pool hours and other aquatic center programs such as swim classes or SCUBA diving.

This is a fun and refreshing way to start the weekend. A free event that’s open to all UMKC students, but it must be co-sponsored by an affiliated UMKC organization. Get your student or campus organization set up a splash event today.

Swimming Lessons

Private, Semi-Private and Small Group swimming lessons are available for swimmers ranging in age from 3 to adult. This swim program is for participants who would like to improve their skills. The main focus will be on increasing the swimming skill competency of each swimmer based upon their individual ability and needs. Instructors provide swimmers the opportunity for achievement at various levels.

Private lessons are $20.00 per lesson; semi-private lessons are $12.50 per person, per lesson; and small group lessons are $10.00 per person, per lesson. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length; times are based upon individual time preference(s) and instructor availability (outside of daily scheduled lap swim times*). Scheduling a minimum of 3 lessons is preferred. Scheduling a session may take up to 2 weeks in advance. Please contact us with your time preference(s) and contact information.
