Team Member Positions

Our student staff works together with SRC administration under the guidance of Swinney Rec Connect. Swinney Rec Connect is a top-notch Student Affairs employment program within Campus Recreation and Intramurals. Our mission is to create a model customer service experience through mentoring, training and leadership programs that fosters a culture of excellence within our team.


UMKC students hold frontline positions in all departments at Swinney Recreation Center. From graduate assistants to building supervisors to lifeguards to core team members, students play an integral part of our daily and long-term missions.


To be eligible for employment at Swinney Recreation Center, you must be a current UMKC student and attend one of the recruitment sessions that are held near or at the beginning of each academic semester. If we have staffing needs, our positions are typically available at the beginning of each semester.

Building Supervisor

Essential Duties

    Hide List
    • Supervises entire student staff of facility, including the aquatics, control, fitness and service enters
    • Master complete knowledge of all areas within Swinney Recreation Center (aquatics, control, fitness and service centers)
    • Possess a working knowledge of all policies, procedures, programs and services of Campus Recreation & Intramurals and Swinney Recreation Center, as well as membership information
    • Responsible for following facility schedule, including academic classes, intercollegiate athletics, Campus Recreation & Intramurals and special events
    • First point of conflict resolution involving users of Swinney Recreation Center, referring all problems and complaints to supervisor
    • Open facility in a timely fashion and securely close the facility on a daily basis, including handling of daily cash intake
    • Complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisor
    • Duties may require heavy lifting of equipment

Core Staff

Essential Duties

    • Must possess a thorough understanding of policies, procedures, programs, operation and services of Campus Recreation & Intramurals and Swinney Recreation Center
    • Be friendly, outgoing, helpful and professional with all patrons and guests.
    • Securely admit all patrons and guests through the Control Center
    • Operate cash register, collect guest fees and other monies, and properly maintain guest fees and forms
    • Promptly answer telephone with well-informed knowledge of membership, programs and classes, and any special events held in Swinney Recreation Center
    • Assist Building Supervisor in monitoring daily schedule and activities throughout facility
    • Must possess a working knowledge of all equipment and machines
    • Assist patrons with proper usage of equipment, monitoring and reporting any improper use to supervisor
    • Maintain and issue equipment to patrons, keeping accurate record of all exchanges in computer system
    • Make racquetball court reservations
    • Wash and fold towels
    • Maintain and clean the control, fitness and service centers
    • Duties may require heavy lifting of equipment
    • Must be able to complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisor

Lifeguard

Essential Duties

    • Supervises entire aquatic facility
    • Prevent accidents through proper supervision and consistent rule enforcement (educate the patrons in a helpful manner)
    • Respond quickly and properly to emergencies in and out of the water
    • Must have a complete working knowledge of all aquatic facility policies, procedures, programs and services
    • Report any incidents and/or unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor
    • Assist in maintaining facility cleanliness by participating in cleaning duties and chemical/temperature checks as assigned
    • Perform as a team player and be responsible for all your shifts
    • Maintain an acceptable appearance at all times (uniform required)
    • Participate in staff in-service training sessions
    • Must be able to complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisor
    • Duties may require heavy lifting of equipment

Qualifications

Special Events

Essential Duties

    • Assist with setup and teardown of special events hosted in Swinney Recreation Center
    • Supervises spectators and participants during all special events
    • First point of conflict resolution involving those in attendance at Swinney Recreation Center, referring all problems and complaints to supervisor
    • Firmly adhere to the policies and procedures of Swinney Recreation Center
    • Exhibit a solid working knowledge regarding the administration of special events
    • Must be able to complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisor, including custodial and clean-up duties
    • Duties will require heavy lifting of equipment
