WELCOME TO SWINNEY RECREATION CENTER

Those of us at UMKC and the Swinney Recreation are happy that you have decided to become a member of this exciting facility. Please remember that this is your center. So, enjoy it as often as you can.

Seasonal changes in the operating hours may occur from time to time. You will be notified in advanced of any changes.

Occasionally, the center will be closed or partially closed for maintenance, holidays, recreational uses, or to accommodate selected University-sponsored activities, such as commencement. This will not happen often and if so, you will receive prior notice.

Physical education classes and intramural and recreation activities will be held in the center at various times throughout the day. Schedules for closed areas (those being used for classes, inter-collegiate athletic practice, or campus recreation) are posted at the main desk.

IMPORTANT

Before you take advantage of any of the exciting recreational and fitness activities at the Swinney Recreation Center, we urge you to consult your physician regarding your ability/preparedness to participate in the various activities offered. The University assumes that users of the center have verified their health/fitness with their personal physicians and that they assume their own risk in participating.
 

SWINNEY RECREATION CENTER MEMBERSHIP

About Your Membership

Swinney Recreation center exists for its members - UMKC students, faculty, staff and selected University affiliates. So that we can continue to offer you the environment and privileges that you would expect from a members - only recreation center, you will be asked to show student or faculty/staff identification or your SRC Membership Activity Card each time you use the center.

No one, including students enrolled in Physical Education classes, will have access to activity areas without showing the required UMKC photo identification. (If there is a question about the validity of an ID, you may be asked to show a second piece of identification.)

Full - and part-time UMKC students automatically are members of SRC, and membership charges are assessed with other students fees.

Others eligible to purchase memberships:
1.    Full - or part-time UMKC students’ spouses
2.    Full - or part-time University compensated employee of the UMKC.
3.    Retired UMKC faculty and staff
4.    Graduates of University of Missouri System (UMKC, UMC, UMSL, UMR)
5.    Members of approved UMKC affiliated organization
6.    Spouses of affiliated members (there are no family memberships)

Membership Specifies
 

  1. Affiliate memberships are purchased for 3 month, 6 month, or on an annual basis.            Student a (from the 2nd  first day of class of the current semester to the first day of class of the next semester).
  2. You must be at least 18 years old to be a member of the SRC, unless you are   UMKC student.
  3. Your membership is not transferable.
  4. Your membership status cannot change from an individual / spouse to individual during the membership period.

Cancellation Information

Cancellation of an individual or spouse membership will be allowed only under special circumstances. There will be no cancellation privileges with student memberships. Please contact the Manager for Membership relations at 235-1556 for specific information.

Parking

Parking for use of the recreation center is available in the metered lots north and east of the University Center (off Rock hill), and between the Residence Hall (5030 Cherry) and the parking structure at the corner of 50th and Cherry.

Parking is available in the parking structure, 50th and Cherry, weekdays after 5 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Do not park in a restricted lot designed for faculty and staff. Your vehicle will be ticketed.

Guest Rules and Regulations:

  1. You may bring up to two guests a day. A daily guest pass must be purchased for each guest at the Control Center. Guests must:
     a.    be 18 years of age or older.
     b.    be with a sponsor who can show a valid membership card.
     c.    show valid photo identification.
     d.    check activity area availability before purchasing a guest pass
    .
  2. Sponsors must stay with their guests at all times, except when guests of the opposite sex are using locker room facilities. 
  3. Guests passes are issued for one day only. If your guest(s) want to leave the, center for the part of the day they will be able to regain admission to the center. If guests lose their passes, new ones may be obtained upon verification of payment and showing of proper identification.
  4. Sponsoring individuals are responsible for the conduct of their guests.
  5. Only sponsors can check out equipment to be used by guests.
  6. Please meet your guests before checking into the center. Members will not be paged to  meet their guests, nor will guests be able to enter activity areas to look for their sponsors.
  7. Daily guest passes are not transferable.
  8. Do not bring in individuals who are loitering outside the Swinney Recreation Center as your guests.
  9. Special arrangements may be made for members during the holidays for extended family members visiting from out of town.


SWINNEY RECREATION CENTER RULES AND REGULATIONS
General Building Information

  1. People using the facilities must wear gym shoes and appropriate activity attire.  Everyday clothes are unacceptable. Black-soled athletic shoe allowed in the Fitness Center only.
  2. Smoking or other use of tobacco products is not permitted in the center.
  3. To help keep the center clean, and for your safety, glass containers, food and beverages are not allowed beyond the Control Center. A vending lounge is available for members.
  4. Bicycle racks are provided outside the center; no bicycles are allowed in the building.
  5. Lost and found items can be claimed or turned in at the Service Center.
  6. Postings on the bulletin boards in the center must be approved by the Student Life Office, Room 131 - University Center.
  7. No spitting, except in proper receptacles. Violators will be reprimanded accordingly.
  8.  No pets are allowed in the SRC or on the outside track.
  9.  The elevator is for restricted use only. (Details available at the Control Center.)
  10.  You can listen to your own radio if you use headphones.
  11.  Please report suspicious individuals loitering or wondering through the SRC to the Control Center.
  12. UMKC will not be responsible for items that are lost or stolen.
  13. Please help keep your recreation center clean. Pick up and dispose of trash and litter. Glass containers are strictly prohibited in the center.

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT FOR SWINNEY RECREATION CENTER MEMBERS

Individuals contracting for membership in the Swinney Recreation Center assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the University’s function as an educational institution.

  1. Conduct that may jeopardize an individual’s membership in SRC: 
    Forgery, alteration, or misuse of membership records or identification, or knowingly furnishing false information to SRC.
  2. Obstruction or disruption of teaching, University administration, or other University activities, including its public service functions or other authorized activities at SRC.
  3. Physical abuse that threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person.
  4. Theft of or damage to property of the University or activity that endangers the health or safety of  any person.
  5. Unauthorized entry to or use of the SRC.
  6. Use, possession or distribution of narcotics or dangerous drugs, except as expressly permitted by law.
  7. Disorderly, lewd, indecent, obscene or other inappropriate conduct or expression.
  8. Failure to comply with directions of University officials acting in the performance of their duties.

ACTIVITY INFORMATION, POLICIES and PROCEDURES

The Locker Rooms

Lockers, available on a day-to-day basis, are included as part of your membership. This provision enables you to check out a daily padlock, towel and equipment at the service center window. All the items should be returned prior to leaving the facility.

A limited number of lockers are available on a first come, first serve basis for yearly rental. Please inquire in the membership office regarding rates and availability.
SRC day locks cannot be left on overnight. Items left in lockers overnight will be removed by center staff. Personal padlocks are not allowed. Personal locks will be immediately cut off and the contents removed and stored in the Equipment Room’s Lost and Found and may be reclaimed at a cost to you.

IMPORTANT: Since we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items, always make sure your locker is well-secured. If possible, leave valuables at home. Running, horseplay or other activities that could jeopardize the personal safety of SRC participants and staff are not allowed in the locker rooms.

WARNING: Wet surfaces in the locker room may be slippery. Please watch your step!
  

EQUIPMENT CHECKOUT

  1. Members can check out basketballs, volleyballs, Frisbees, jump ropes, racquets, safety glasses and other equipment at the Equipment Room.
  2. Members are responsible for all equipment checked out to them and will be charged replacement cost for all lost, stolen or damaged items.
     

FITNESS TRAINING CENTER

  1. During peak usage times, circuit training will be required. The attendant on duty will have the authority to keep users moving through the circuit in an order and timely manner.
  2. Individuals cannot bring their own free weights.
  3. It is important that the equipment be used in the proper manner. All users must go through a training session before using any equipment in this room.
  4. If, at any time, you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated or otherwise ill, please notify the attendant. You are advised not to work out or participate vigorously if ill or injured.

COURT RESERVATION POLICIES FOR RACQUETBALL, HANDBALL, SQUASH

  1. All courts are limited to one hour for playing time per person per day.
  2. Court Reservations can be made by phone or in person for 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., one day before or the day of desired participation. To reserve a court, please call 235-2715 or stop by the Equipment Room. Cancellation must be done no later than two hours prior to court time. No-shows will be charged a court fee.
  3. To claim a court:
    a.    Check in the Equipment Room first.
    b.    Show your validated SRC membership card to
    the Equipment Room attendant.                                                                                                             c.     Failure to check-in may result in a forfeiture of  court time.
    d.    Courts not claimed within ten (10) minutes
    after reserved time may be forfeited and   then will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
    e.    When claiming a court in use, please wait until the point being played has ended before knocking on
    the door.
    f.     Any discrepancies will be settled by the Official Clock and Reservation Chart located in the Equipment Room.
    g.    To claim an unreserved court for that day, check the court sheet located at the Equipment Room.

  4. Equipment/General Policies:
    a.    For players’ safety, eye guards should be worn at all  times. They can be checked out at the Equipment Room.
    b.    Black-soled shoes are not allowed.
    c.    For your safety, wrist lanyards are required on all racquets and must be around the wrist while playing.
    d.    All metal racquets must have a plastic head guard.
    e.    Handballs may not be used with racquets under any circumstances.

 

BASKETBALL COURT POLICIES

  1. Black-soled shoes, or any shoes that mark the floor, are not permitted on the playing courts.
  2. Dunking, grabbing or hanging on basketball rims is prohibited; violators will be reprimanded accordingly.
  3. Soccer balls, baseballs, footballs, Frisbees and other equipment and activities that are deemed unsafe in the gymnasium environment are prohibited during open recreation, unless SRC staff members supervise the activity.
  4. Do not lean on, pull on or sit on the divider curtains.
  5. Court usage guidelines:
     a. 
    At high-use times, courts will be broken down to accommodate other activities.
     b.  The decision to break down courts will be made by the facility supervisor and will     be based on the participant needs.

SWIMMING POOL
For you safety, it is imperative that you be familiar with all open recreation pool rules and regulations. The lifeguard on duty is to be obeyed at all times.

  1. The pool may be used only when a lifeguard or instructor is present.
  2. For you health and hygiene, all swimmers must wear an appropriate swimsuit. Cuts off jeans are unacceptable.  People working out in other activity areas are not allowed to use the same apparel in the pool.
  3. A complete head-to-toe shower is required before entering the natatorium.
  4. Anyone using the sundeck must take a shower before entering the water.
  5. For your safety and efficient pool filtration, Band-Aids, hair accessories, earrings, gym, etc., are not to be used in the pool.
  6. Running, horseplay and exhibitions that could jeopardize the personal safety of SRC participants are prohibited.
  7. Air mattresses, floating toys and any other personal objects used for throwing are not allowed at any time.
  8. Underwater swimming endurance contests are strictly prohibited.
  9. Only plastic and paper containers are allowed in the natatorium or on sundeck (no glass).
  10. People with open sore or contagious infections, such as athlete’s foot, impetigo and ringworm, are not permitted in the pool. (Please see the lifeguard if you have any questions.)
  11. Street shoes are not permitted on the pool deck.
  12. If you must spit, please use facilities in the locker room.
    WARNING: Wet surfaces in the natatorium may be slippery. Please watch your step.
  13. Masks, fins and snorkels may be used for conditioning purpose in the lap lanes. Scuba diving is not allowed during open recreation.
  14. DIVING RULES:
    a.   One person on the dividing at one time.
    b.   The lifeguard has the authority to remove anyone from diving boards because of inexperience and dangerous diving.
    c.    Make sure diving area is clear before diving.
    d.    Dive off the front of the board only.
    e.    Back dive and somersaults from the edge of the pool are not permitted.

    f.    Only one bounce is permitted on the board.
  15. Lifeguards on duty have complete control and authority concerning the activities in and around the pool area.

TRACK AREA

  1. The inside lane of the track is reserved for walking.
  2. Users must abide by daily track direction.
  3. Skateboards, roller-skates, etc., are prohibited.
  4. No hanging or sitting on track railing.
  5. Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times.
  6. A ¼-mile outdoor track also is available to all SRC members.
  7. Reading is not allowed on the indoor or outdoor track.

 AUXILIARY GYM
Aerobic Exercise/Dance/Combative Room Policies

This room is reserved for campus recreation activities only.
 

STEAM AND SAUNA

  1. The saunas are dry saunas. Pouring water over the heating elements will damage the heater and is strictly forbidden.
  2. Shaving is not allowed in saunas and steam rooms.
  3. Soap, shampoo, conditioners or oils are not allowed in saunas or steam rooms.
    Reading is not allowed in saunas or steam rooms.
  4. Saunas and steam rooms should be used in moderation (a maximum of 15 minutes a day is recommended).
  5. People with open sores or contagious infections or diseases, such as athlete’s foot, impetigo and ringworm, are not permitted in saunas and steam rooms.
  6. Anyone with serious health problems, such as heart condition, should consult a physician before using the saunas and steam rooms.
  7. Proper attire must be worn in sauna and steam room. (Swimsuit, shorts, etc.)

FITNESS TESTING CENTER

The Fitness Testing Center is an option designed to provide individuals an opportunity to obtain assessments of their personal physical fitness status, nutritional status and general health-risk profile. The physical fitness components assessed include:
