Important Information

Before you take advantage of any of the exciting recreational and fitness activities at the Swinney Recreation Center, we urge you to consult your physician regarding your ability and preparedness to participate in the various activities offered. The University assumes that users of the center have verified their health/fitness with their personal physicians and that they assume their own risk in participating.

Welcome to Swinney Recreation Center.

UMKC and Swinney Recreation Center (SRC) are pleased to have you become part of the university family and a member of this exciting facility. Remember that this is your center, so enjoy it as often as possible.

Seasonal and holiday changes in facility operating hours will occur occasionally. Signage will be posted notifying members of these changes in advance. Occasionally, SRC will be closed or partially closed for selected university-sponsored activities (commencement, intercollegiate athletics events), campus recreation uses or maintenance.

Physical education classes, intercollegiate athletics, intramural and campus recreation activities are held in SRC at various times throughout the day. Daily schedules for closed areas are posted at the main desk.

Swinney Recreation Center rules and regulations
(general building information)

  • People using the facilities must wear gym shoes and appropriate activity attire. Everyday clothes are unacceptable. Black-soled athletic shoes allowed in the Fitness Center only.
  • Smoking or other use of tobacco products is not permitted.
  • To help keep the center clean, and for your safety, glass containers, food and beverages are not allowed beyond the Control Center. A vending lounge is available for members.
  • Bicycle racks are provided outside the center; no bicycles are allowed in the building.
  • Lost and found items can be claimed or turned in at the Service Center.
  • Postings on the bulletin boards in the center must be approved by the Office of Student Involvement, Student Union 320.
  • No spitting, except in proper receptacles. Violators will be reprimanded accordingly.
  • No pets are allowed in SRC or inside Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field or outdoor track.
  • The elevator is for restricted use only. (Details available at the Control Center.) You can listen to your own music if you use headphones.
  • Please report suspicious individuals loitering or wandering through the SRC to the Control Center.
  • UMKC will not be responsible for items that are lost or stolen.
  • Please help keep your recreation center clean. Pick up and dispose of trash and litter. Glass containers are strictly prohibited in the center.

Standards of conduct for Swinney Recreation Center members:

  • Individuals contracting for membership in the Swinney Recreation Center assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the University's function as an educational institution.

Conduct that may jeopardize an individual's membership in SRC:

  • Forgery, alteration, or misuse of membership records or identification, or knowingly furnishing false information to SRC.
  • Obstruction or disruption of teaching, University administration, or other university activities, including its public service functions or other authorized activities at SRC.
  • Physical abuse that threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person.
  • Theft of or damage to property of the University or activity that endangers the health or safety of any person.
  • Unauthorized entry to or use of the SRC.
  • Use, possession or distribution of narcotics or dangerous drugs, except as expressly permitted by law.
  • Disorderly, lewd, indecent, obscene or other inappropriate conduct or expression.
  • Failure to comply with directions of University officials acting in the performance of their duties.

Guest rules and regulations

  • Members may bring up to two guests a day. A daily guest pass must be purchased for each guest at the Control Center. Guests must be 18 years of age or older, be with a sponsor who can show a valid membership card and show valid photo identification.
  • Check activity area availability before purchasing a guest pass.
  • Sponsors must stay with their guests at all times, except when guests of the opposite sex are using locker room facilities.
  • Guest passes are issued for one day only. If your guest(s) want to leave the center for the part of the day they will be able to regain admission to the center. If guests lose their passes, new ones may be obtained upon verification of payment and showing of proper identification.
  • Individuals are responsible for the conduct of their guests.
  • Only sponsors can check out equipment to be used by guests.
  • Please meet your guests before checking into the center. Members will not be paged to meet their guests, nor will guests be able to enter activity areas to look for their sponsors.
  • Daily guest passes are not transferable.
  • Do not bring in individuals who are loitering outside the Swinney Recreation Center as your guests.
  • Special arrangements may be made for members during the holidays for extended family members visiting from out of town.

Rules and regulations

  • Black-soled shoes, or any shoes that mark the floor, are not permitted on the courts.
  • Dunking, grabbing or hanging on basketball rims is prohibited; violators will be reprimanded accordingly.
  • Soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, Frisbees and other equipment and activities that are deemed unsafe in the gymnasium environment are prohibited during open recreation, unless SRC staff members supervise the activity.
  • Do not lean on, pull on or sit on the divider curtains.

Court usage guidelines:

  • At high-use times, courts will be broken down to accommodate other activities.
  • The decision to break down courts will be made by the facility supervisor and will be based on the participant needs.

Indoor track guidelines

To ensure your safety, please see your physician before starting a fitness or weight training program.

  • Athletic footwear required. No spikes, sandals, open-toed shoes or unprotected footwear permitted
  • Inside lane of track is reserved for walking and outside lane is reserved for running/sprinting
  • Abide by posted daily track direction at all times
  • No hanging, sitting or leaning on track railing
  • No spectating of basketball courts from track level
  • Proper attire required. Shirts must be worn at all times
  • No mobile phone usage allowed
  • No spitting on track surfaces, walls or windows
  • Please be courteous to those with whom you share the Indoor Track. Do not walk side by side during periods of heavy usage

To ensure your safety, please see your physician before starting a fitness or weight training program.

Before using any piece of exercise equipment, carefully read instruction on how to operate machine properly. Instructional videos for many machines are available upon request. Follow instructions completely. Observe any and all warnings or dangers described.

Improper use of equipment may result in injury.

Defective, broken or worn parts in need of repair or replacement should be reported to SRC personnel immediately.

If at any time you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated or ill, please notify the attendant. You are advised not to work out or participate vigorously if you’re ill or injured.

If you need additional information or instruction, please ask for assistance from Fitness Center floor staff.

  • Athletic footwear required. No sandals, open-toed shoes or unprotected footwear permitted
  • Secure personal items (gym bags, backpacks, purses, etc.) in a locker before using Fitness Center
  • All free weights, dumbbells and accessories must be re-racked and returned to their proper weight trees or racks
  • Slamming or dropping weights in prohibited (if you can lift it, please do not drop it)
  • Wipe down all equipment after usage
  • Do no move machines at any time or remove equipment from Fitness Center without permission
  • No mobile phone usage in Fitness Center
  • No food or drink (other than water in a closed container) permitted in Fitness Center
  • Personal training is permitted by authorized SRC staff only

Remember: Patrons are to show courtesy to others who may ask to work out on a machine in use
During peak usage times, circuit training will be required. Swinney Recreation Center staff will have authority to keep patrons moving through the circuit in an orderly and timely manner

Racquetball, handball and squash courts guidelines

To ensure your safety, please see your physician before starting a fitness or weight training program.

Court reservations may be made by phone or in person on the day prior to or the day of desired usage. To reserve a court, contact the Service Center (816-235-2715). Cancellations must be done no later than two hours prior to court time. No shows may be charged a court usage fee.

Courts not claimed within ten minutes after reserved time may be forfeited. Court will then be available on a first-come, first-served basis. When accessing a court, please wait until the point being played has ended before knocking on door or walking onto court.

Any reservation discrepancies will be settled by the official clock and reservation sheet at the Service Center.

  • Protective eyewear should be worn at all times
  • Only non-marking athletic footwear is permitted on the court surface. No street shoes, sandals, open-toed shoes or unprotected footwear (including bare feet) permitted
  • Wrist lanyards are required on all racquets and must be worn around the wrist during play
  • All metal racquets must have a protective head guard
  • Handballs cannot be used with racquets under any circumstances
  • No spitting on courts is permitted
  • Each student/patron is responsible for all items checked out from Service Center. All broken equipment will be subject to replacement fees
  • Court reservations are on the hour; 1 hour per pair or group is permitted at peak times. Failure to check-in at Service Center may result in forfeiture of court time

Steam and sauna room guidelines

To ensure your safety, please see your physician before starting a fitness or weight training program.

  • Shower before entering the sauna and steam room (also shower after usage before entering pool)
  • Tampering or pouring water over the heating elements will damage the heater and is strictly forbidden
  • Shaving is not allowed in saunas and steam rooms Soap, shampoo, conditioners or oils are not allowed in sauna or steam room Reading materials are not allowed in sauna or steam room.
  • Sauna and steam room should be used in moderation (a maximum of 15 minutes a day is recommended)
  • People with open sores or contagious infections or diseases, such as athlete’s foot, impetigo and ringworm, are not permitted in sauna and steam room
  • Anyone with serious health problems, such as heart condition, should consult a physician before using the sauna and steam room
  • Proper attire must be worn in sauna and steam room (swimsuit, shorts, shower shoes, no tennis shoes)
  • Please bring a towel on which to sit comfortably. Inappropriate conduct or failure to comply with SRC policies and procedures may jeopardize membership

Lap swimming etiquette:

For the health and enjoyment of all swimmers, please abide by the following:

  • Expect to share a lane. If there are three or more swimmers, you must circle swim
  • Swim in a counterclockwise direction staying on the right side of the lane
  • Try to swim with others of your own pace
  • Pass only when the passing lane (middle of lane) is clear
  • Avoid congregating at end walls
  • Move to far corners of the lane if you need to stop
  • Be courteous and use caution at all times while swimming

Rules and regulations:

  • For your health and safety, it is imperative patrons and students alike familiarize themselves with all Aquatic Center rules and regulations.
  • The use of any part of the Aquatic Center is prohibited unless supervised by an SRC lifeguard or other approved staff. Designated hours are posted.
  • Lifeguards have the authority on all matters in the Aquatic Center and must be obeyed at all times.
  • No diving in shallow water.
  • Purposeful hyperventilation is strictly prohibited.
  • Swimming under the bulkhead is strictly prohibited.
  • The emergency alert system is one long whistle blast. All patrons must exit the pool.
  • Personal items should be placed in lockers.
  • Appropriate swimming attire is to be worn at all times.
  • Swimmers must remove bandages or adhesive tape before entering the pool.
  • Food, gum, and glass containers are not allowed within the Aquatic Center.
  • Running, pushing, shoving or horseplay is not permitted. Please walk.
  • Diving boards may only be used when permitted. Proper diving board use must be followed at all times.
  • Teaching lessons for personal gain is not permitted.

Follow healthy swimming behaviors (practice good hygiene):

  • Showers are required before entering pool.
  • Do not swim when ill with diarrhea. Do not swallow pool water.
  • Patrons with skin diseases, infections, or open sores are not permitted to use pool.
  • Nose blowing and spitting in the pool or gutters is not allowed

Recreational field and outdoor track guidelines

To ensure your safety, please see your physician before starting a fitness or weight training program.

  • Athletic footwear required. No metal spikes and/or cleats, sandals, open-toed shoes or unprotected footwear permitted
  • Inside lane of track is reserved for walking and outside lane is reserved for running/sprinting
  • No bicycles, roller blades or skateboards permitted
  • No pets allowed on track or field
  • No gum, food (particularly sunflower seeds) or drinks allowed on track or field
  • No tobacco or alcoholic beverages permitted
  • No mobile phone usage allowed while exercising
  • No spitting on track or field surfaces
  • When gates are locked, entry and exit to and from track and field areas must be via Swinney Recreation Center or Team Support Building
  • Please be courteous to those with whom you share the Outdoor Track. Do not walk side by side during periods of heavy usage
  • Outside lane of track will remain open during all UMKC Track & Field practices as well as Campus Recreation & Intramurals events
  • Track and field areas will close 90 minutes before posted start times for UMKC Soccer matches

Fitness Facts

~ Calcium helps with blood clotting, nerve signaling, muscle contraction and relaxation, and the release of certain hormones. It is also needed for a normal heartbeat.
