Swinney Recreation Locker Rooms will open for use on Monday August 4, 2008. 

Finishing touches will continue thru August 15, 2008 but the work will be completed after the Recreation Center closes in the evening. The student locker room entrance is located off the new hall leading to the pool.  Faculty, staff, and  community members will enter their locker room thru the original locker room entrance.  Maps will be available at the control and service center with directions to each locker room.  The date of the opening for the steam and sauna will be announce the week of August 4.  We hope you enjoy the new locker rooms and appreciate your patience's during the renovation.  Continue to look for updates on our Grand Opening. 

 
Swinney Recreation seeks to become a destination for recreational and fitness services to the UMKC community. Part of this transformation is focused on updating our facilities to meet today’s standards and expectations of our members.

The renovation of the locker rooms involves a complete renovation and redesign of 7,550 sq. ft of space that includes locker room redesign, HVAC updates, steam room and sauna room relocation and creating a corridor for direct access to pool area. Renovated features include  individual showers, ceramic tile flooring and solid surface counter tops.

International Architects Atelier (IAA) was selected as the design document consultant for the locker room renovation project and Stranger Industries, Inc will serve as the construction general contractor for the project.
 
Renovation Schedule:
Start Date: January 23, 2008
End Date: August 3, 2008
Project Closeout: August 15, 2008
January 23, 2008 to February 20, 2008:
Construct men’s and women’s temporary locker room in room 131. Temporary locker room will consist of 3 showers, 2 sinks and lockers. 12 days
 

January 30, 2008 to April 15, 2008:
Construction of new steam and sauna – location - pool deck – 55 days
 
Phase 1: February 13, 2008 to June 24, 2008:
Construct temporary corridor for pool access. Begin demolition of the existing men’s locker room. Construct new men’s locker rooms.
 
June 17, 2008 to July 3, 2008:
Construct center corridor leading to pool.
 
Phase 2: March 20, 2008 to July 11, 2008:
Demo women’s locker rooms. Construct women’s new locker rooms
 
June 14, 2008 to June25, 2008:
Reconfigure Temporary Locker room to Physical Education Lab:
   
July 8, 2008 to July 16 Locker installation.  Floor tile installation complete  July  11.  Shower partitions in men's locker room installation week of July 5.  Tiling of steam room to be completed by July 16. 
   
July 11, 2008 Ceramic tile in locker rooms is complete. Service Center desk to be completed by July 18. Lockers are being installed and will be completed by July 18.  Wiring of steam and sauna will begin week of July 14,2008.
 
July 17, 2008 Locker rooms are in the final stages of completion.  Service center counter will be completed by the second week of August.  A tentative opening is scheduled for early August .
