students lead

The Student Life Office is committed to developing leaders who are socially, intellectually, spiritually, and physically self-actualized, who are grounded in ethics, and who will work courageously to improve the lives of themselves and others.

The Student Life Office caters leadership sessions for students in every walk of campus life.  From first-semester students seeking their niches, to campus leaders standing up for change, to graduates looking forward to Alumni life, the Student Life Office has programs to push old boundaries and expand horizons.

We recognize leadership as a process of growth.  The Leadership Experience at UMKC is structured to guide the growing leader through the six stages of leadership identity development based on the theoretical model developed by Komives, et. al. (2004).

stage1

Talent Scholars Leadership Program: Talent Scholarship recipients participate in this specifically designed leadership program.  Through 170 hours of service during their freshman and sophomore years, Talent Scholars are pushed to develop their personal and professional identities in a structured series of individual and group activities in the community and the University.  The Student Life Office coordinates programming, tracks participation, and assists students in maintaining their eligibility and successful completion.

Scholars 4 Success: Scholars 4 Success is specifically designed to help first-year scholars acclimate to college, find friendships with similar-minded students, and develop knowledge and skills to help them be successful students and citizens.  S4S includes seminars throughout the year and communications to track academic progress, to share relevant campus activities, and to provide effective tips for being successful in college.

stage2

Emerging Leaders: The Emerging Leaders is an intensive eight-week leadership development program that introduces personal and organizational leadership, specially designed for students looking to develop basic leadership skills.  Two-hour sessions challenge participants to explore different leadership theories and undergo practical training for the UMKC leadership experience.  Emerging Leaders also participate in the Involvement Challenge and Community Service Day.

M.B. Rickard Mentoring Program: Following the vision and generosity of alumnus William Poland, the M.B. Rickard Mentoring Program pairs specially trained junior and senior year students with first-year students to ease and expedite the transition to UMKC life.  Mentors begin contacting their proteges the summer before their enrollment at UMKC begins.  Mentors remain in contact throughout the first semester, participating with their proteges in a variety of formal and informal sessions designed to integrate students into campus leadership and develop skills for college life and beyond.

stage3

Involvement Challenge: The Involvement Challenge takes UMKC students to an experientially-based ropes course.  Combining traditional training methods with interactive techniques, participants are challenged with low ropes elements, group games, and other vigorous teambuilding activities.  The high ropes course increases the challenge with intensive climbing apparatuses and elevated elements.  Any student can participate in these challenge-by-choice activities to develop creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills.

The Involvement Challenge is a dynamic and innovative program designed exclusively for students interested in getting involved at UMKC. This program offers opportunities and learning experiences that promote personal development and leadership skills. The activities allow you to get to know the many unique facets of UMKC at your own pace.  You should take up the challenge if you want to:

  • balance classroom learning and out-of-class activities to enjoy the best of both worlds
  • have fun while you meet new people and broaden your circle of friends
  • make the connection with UMKC by getting to know the system through interaction with key student leaders
  • faculty and staff on campus
  • enhance your leadership skills and transition to UMKC
  • begin participating in college life at your own pace
  • thrive when challenged to participate in new and exciting activities

Student Organization Leaders Workshop: Student organization leaders work provides some of the most fulfilling and frustrating experiences in student leadership. Students must serve their peers best interests often times against their wants and do so within the structure of UMKC. The Leaders Workshop provides explanations of UMKC regulations, methods for procuring and using funds, and suggestions for hosting and promoting events. The program also develops skills for running effective meetings, managing conflicts among members, holding office with integrity, and elevating organizational standards. Organizations must be represented at the workshop for an organization to receive Student Government Association operating funds.

Student Council Leadership Workshop: Each year students in every academic unit elect peers to lead and govern them on student councils.  The Student Council Leadership Workshop is designed and presented annually for these elected officers to educate them regarding University policies and procedures and the many rules and regulations by which their student groups need to abide.  Leaders may also use the session to share ideas for successful projects, programs, services, and activities, and to connect with their student counterparts and University professional staff.

Greek Leadership Institute: The Greek Leadership Institute encompasses the range of Student Life programming to develop and promote UMKC's fraternity and sorority community as a means to attract, nurture, and develop responsible community leaders.  The GLI incorporates recruitment, policy development, officer training, new member education, risk management, internal and external public relations, intra-Greek communication, and development of relations with Alumni members.  The ultimate goal of the Greek Leadership Institute is to provide for the long-term growth, quality, and security of UMKC's Greek community as a venue to develop well-rounded leaders who uphold the Greek values of scholarship, service, friendship, and character.

stage4

Students are challenged to incorporate the ideals espoused by the consortium into their personal development and in their organizational leadership. Attendance to the formal event is by written invitation.

Leadership on Demand (Scheduled by Request): In addition to scheduled leadership programs, the Student Life Office can present tailor-made sessions on a wide range of subjects to suit a group's particular needs. These may include risk-taking, goal-setting, events promotion, problem solving, risk management, teambuilding, conflict management, diversity, and many other topics. Activities are highly interactive, incorporating hands-on experiential tasks, introspective discussions, and fun.

Staff will create workshops according to group size, needs, and abilities. Sessions can range in duration from one hour to multiple days.
