The Talent Scholars Leadership Program began in Fall 1999 and came under the administration of the Student Life Office in Fall 2002. The program is designed to offer incoming freshman and sophomore scholars an opportunity to be involved in the UMKC and Kansas City community. Additionally, our objective is to create a program that is consistent with our mission statement and enhances the participants: social, cultural, recreational, educational and intellectual learning and creates life-long learning opportunities. Scholarship Eligibility: To be eligible for the program, applicants must:
  • Be in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability.
  • Enroll as a full-time UMKC student.
  • Commit to living in one of the UMKC Residence Halls.
  • Commit to 170 hours of service to UMKC during each academic year in which the scholarship is received.
Scholarship Renewal: The scholarship is renewable sophomore year based on::
  • The completion of the 170 required Talent Scholar hours.
  • Maintaining a 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
  • Earning at least 24 UMKC credit hours.
  • Committing to live in one of the UMKC Residence Halls.

Since 2003,Talent Scholars who successfully complete the two year requirements of the Talent Scholar program are considered to be graduates of the program. Even though their involvement in the program has ceased, many Talent Scholar graduates continue to be active both in the UMKC and Kansas City communities and go on to receive other scholarships and academic awards.
