Welcome from the director

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be the first to open our doors to the University Center, the college union and “living room” of the University of Missouri – Kansas City campus. We are in the process of completing our 46th year of service to UMKC, and continue in our commitment to enhance the experiences and daily lives of our students and the campus community.

The University Center has taken tremendous strides in creating a vibrant learning and campus life experience for our students and the campus in the past year. Our renovated eateries, which opened in the fall of 2006, provide our students and guests with a dining experience never before seen on our campus. We have variety, choices, brand names and, most importantly, opportunities to connect with each other, in a beautiful and comfortable setting. Our recently constructed E-Lounge, located in the Luzier Lounge on our first level, presents students with the opportunity to relax, engage in conversation, communicate electronically, or study in a fully furnished and wireless environment. The University Bookstore is newly renovated and provides our students with a fresh, contemporary environment to secure textbooks, purchase technology, and procure soft goods that support the spirit of UMKC and our Kangaroos. More changes for the Center are on the way, and we will continue to strive to meet the needs and expectations of our students and guests.

While these physical changes have certainly enhanced the experiences of our facility, the one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the one factor that brings life and vibrancy to the Center; the people! Our primary goal is to strengthen the overall development of our students through formal and informal associations with faculty, staff, alumni, guests, and each other. The University Center is home to the Student Life Office, the Activity and Program Council, the Student Government Association, the Associated Students of the University of Missouri, the Campus HelpLine, the year 1 and 2 Medical Advising Office, the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities, the Campus Information Center, the University Barbershop, and many more who are here to collaborate, facilitate, and assist in the development of our students on a daily basis. In addition, our University Center staff aspires to the highest standard of quality customer service for our guests attending meetings and events hosted in the facility. We annually host more than 2500 events and activities, serving as the central hub for activity on our campus. Doors are truly made to be opened, and we are proud to have the opportunity to welcome everyone in.

Our hope is that this website will provide a window for you to the many services and opportunities that await you in the University Center. Please utilize this tool to connect to the people, places, and partners that can enhance your journey at UMKC.

    Sincerely,

    Jody Jeffries

Our Vision

We proudly share the vision of the Division of Student Affairs, “To be recognized by our students and constituents as an outstanding “service-oriented” department which anticipates and provides for needs beyond the classroom.”

Our Role

The role of the University Center as a college union is to be the “living room” of the campus, providing a gathering place for students, faculty, staff, and guests. The union provides services and conveniences that members of the campus community need on a daily basis and creates an environment for understanding others through formal and informal associations. We have both a direct and indirect impact on each of the facets of the University’s mission, and we are proud of that association.

Our Mission

"To provide daily services and conveniences for the needs of our campus, and an environment for formal and informal associations that enrich the lives of our students and our campus community."
