Donations from faculty and staff to The Campaign for UMKC, the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s ongoing capital campaign, have surpassed their goal by more than $1 million, the UMKC Foundation announced this week.

As a result, the foundation has established a new goal to raise $6.75 million from faculty and staff by the end of June 2016.

“We are thrilled with the generosity being shown by faculty and staff of this university,” said Mel Tyler, vice chancellor of student affairs and enrollment management. “And we are confident that the scholars and professionals who make this university great will step up again so we can meet this exciting new goal.”

As of Feb. 11, gifts through the Faculty & Staff Campaign totaled $6.4 million. The foundation said a $1 million gift from a now-deceased member of the School of Medicine faculty pushed that portion of the campaign beyond its original $5 million goal. Gifts made through the Faculty & Staff campaign can be designated by the donor to any part of the university.

“The gifts from faculty and staff are truly gifts of love,” said Ann Cary, dean of UMKC’s School of Nursing and co-chair of the Faculty & Staff Campaign. “They are gifts from people who know this place very well, to parts of UMKC that they care passionately about. We are so grateful for all of these gifts.”

The university launched The Campaign for UMKC in 2011 with the tagline, “This is the time. This is the place.” The seven-year, $250 million campaign, already has raised almost $240 million for UMKC.

The UMKC Foundation, launched in 2009, is an independent, nonprofit organization that serves as the official fundraising and fund management organization for UMKC.
