Degree OptionsStudents may complete the M.A. requirements in sociology through either 1) the thesis option, or 2) the comprehensive exam option. We advise students who are considering pursuing doctoral studies at any time in the future, or working in a field where they will need research expertise, to take the thesis option. Students pursuing either option will form an advisory committee composed of at least three graduate faculty members.
Thesis OptionThe requirements for this option are 30 credit hours of graduate coursework. Three to six credits of the 30 hours are received for the master's thesis and independent readings. An oral defense of the thesis is required. Students who aspire to further study at the doctoral level should select the thesis option.Comprehensive Exam OptionThis option requires 30 hours of graduate coursework. After completion of all coursework, a comprehensive exam must be passed in the areas of sociological theory, research methods and statistics, and a substantive area of the student's choice.
