5528B Women & Medicine:Patients & Practitioners From Antiquity-Present (3)
This course explores, in a selective fashion, the role of women in Western
Medicine both as health care providers and patients. The subject of the history
of medicine is too broad to be covered comprehensively in a semester, and so we
will focus on diseases or physical conditions which were believed to be limited
to women-childbirth, certain mental health conditions, reproductive health,
breast cancer-as well as the increasing marginalization of women within the
profession of health care providers to those branches concerned primarily with
"women's problems."
