5533 Modern Britain, 1603-Present (3)
This course examines the rise and fall of the Stuart dynasty and the effects of
civil war, rebellion, and religious turmoil on the peoples of Britain. Next,
the establishment of Cabinet government in the eighteenth century, and the loss
of the American colonies will be discussed. The dramatic transformation of
Britain from a largely isolated and agricultural society to an urban and the
industrial one, will be analyzed with particular reference to class, race, and
gender. Finally, the role of Britain in both world wars will be considered
along with the institution of the welfare state and the transformation of
Britain from a world power to a member of the European community of states.
