5501 Social Theory I (3)
Examines the development of social theory in Europe up to the beginning of the
twentieth century, with a focus on its intellectual precursors of social
theory, debates over the nature of society, and controversies over the distinct
features of sociology as an emerging academic discipline. The major
perspectives covered include the intellectual origins of sociological thought
in Great Britain, France, and Germany, and the debates as reflected in the
writings of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Georg Simmel.
Prerequisite: undergraduate course in Sociological Theory. Offered: Fall.
