428 American Architecture And Urbanism (3)
A survey of architecture and urbanism in the United States. We begin in the
early years of the republic, but focus on the period from the Civil War to the
present. Topics include the planning and development of major American cities,
the creation of the skyscraper as a new commercial type, the evolution and
design of the suburb, the emergence of the United States as the center of
modernism following World War II and its displacement from that center with the
pluralistic trends of the last three decades. Prerequisites: ART 254, 303 or
instructor's permission. Offered: Fall.
