308A America: 1914-1945: The Era Of The World Wars (3)
This course examines United States social, intellectual, economic, political
and diplomatic history from the beginning of World War I to the end of World
War II. Special emphasis is placed on the coexistence of realism and idealism
in American foreign policy, the evolution of power shifts within the American
federal system, and the causes and consequences of rapid urban growth and
increased industrial sophistication. Students examine the material and social
texture of life during the two world wars, the so-called "roaring 20s", and the
Great Depression through contemporary art forms (especially novels) and
historical monographs.
