This course examines the rise and fall of the Stuart dynasty and the effects of
civil war, rebellion, and religious turmoil on the peoples of Britain. The domination of
politics and culture by the aristocracy in the eighteenth century is examined. The rise
of the Navy due to constant warfare and the exploration of the Pacific are discussed.
The monarchy of George III, the loss of the American colonies, and the wars with
Napoleon are examined. Finally, the Agricultural and early Industrial Revolutions are
considered through an analysis of the social changes they brought in Britain and the
Empire
