The course explores the human experience of illness and healing and its
intersection with cultural values and institutional arrangements. Various
meanings that are associated with the experience of being sick and caring for
the sick are examined, especially in terms of economic, cultural, and racial
factors. The struggle to make sense out of suffering and the harshness of
disease is examined, as is the possibility for growth, transformation, and
